Research Intern
Background
The Woodman Family Foundation, based in New York City, stewards the artwork and legacies of three artists: Betty Woodman (1930 – 2018), sculptor and ceramicist; Francesca Woodman (1958 – 1981), photographer; and George Woodman (1932 – 2017), painter and photographer.
We maintain and oversee a substantial collection of artworks by each artist from all periods and media, organize museum and gallery exhibitions and publications of their work, and facilitate the placement of their works in public collections. We are cataloguing the extensive archives of each artist to create a study center open to scholars and curators, and we make grants to support the arts.
Research Intern Overview
We seek a Research Intern for Summer 2025. In this role, our intern will work on our artists’ annotated CVs, beginning with Francesca Woodman. If time permits, they will also work on Betty Woodman and George Woodman’s CVs.
Our intern will report to our Collections Coordinator. They will attend weekly meetings with our staff where they will learn about the day-to-day operations of an artist endowed foundation. They will have access to all members of our small team, gaining an understanding of the roles, responsibilities, and professional trajectories of each.
The Research Intern will also be included in various external meetings with gallery representatives, book publishers, and other organizations with whom we are working on projects to provide an introduction the larger art world and its different facets. They will also be a participating member of an artist endowed foundation consortium in New York City that will meet weekly, providing opportunities to meet other interns in the field as well as visit other foundations and institutions around the city.
Responsibilities
The Research Intern will:
- Migrate existing data from Microsoft Word to Airtable
- Conduct online research to fill the gaps in artists’ CVs using museum, galleries, and other institutional websites. The intern may also engage with archival materials
- Collect detailed information about exhibitions, including curators, themes, works shown, exact dates, other artists, exhibition URLs, and more
- Gather exhibition materials such as press releases, checklists, wall texts, installation images, promotional materials, etc. for the Foundation’s internal database
- Create biweekly digital content (social media and website posts) based on their research and engagement with the artists’ CVs to be published on the Foundation’s website and Instagram.
- Write a research essay or develop a project based on their observations of historical and contemporary interpretations of any one of our artists’ works, or some other aspect of their research findings, to be published on the Foundation’s website.
Requirements, Skills, and Qualifications
The Research Intern should:
- Have an understanding of contemporary art and an interest in artist endowed foundations
- Be highly organized and detail-oriented
- Have excellent research and writing skills,
- Be able to work independently.
- Be familiar with Microsoft Office, G Suite, Mac OS Apps, Adobe Creative Cloud, Instagram. Experience with or comfort learning relational databases (Airtable, Claris FileMaker Pro, and/or others) a plus.
Compensation
$22.50 per hour
INTERNS WILL WORK 28 HOURS PER WEEK AND ATTEND A MANDATORY OFFSITE PROGRAM DAY ONE DAY PER WEEK WITH THEIR COHORT.

Workdays: 4 days per week onsite, Monday–Thursday; 9AM–5PM
PROGRAM DAY:
On Fridays, interns will attend an offsite program day with their cohort.
These hours are separate from the internship hours.
