Health and Safety Coordinator

About this Program:

Welcome to WonderKids, an exciting program by the Rural Arts Collaborative designed to help children soar in creativity and emotional resilience! Our summer enrichment camp gives every child the summer camp experience of their dreams, filled with laughter, exploration, and imaginative activities using natural materials. Campers are onsite from 8:30-3:00 each day, with staff working on both sides of that timeframe to prepare and clean up. WonderKids serves kids in grades K-6, Monday through Friday for 5 weeks in July and August. Camp training begins in June.

 

This position is part of a cohort of 12 interns working with organizations that support the Northeast Kingdom community.  Funded by the UVM Leahy Institute for Rural Partnerships, free housing for interns will be provided at Sterling College in Craftsbury, VT.  Interns will participate in a week-long community orientation, weekly intern cohort workshops for professional development, networking, and reflection, and a final sharing event. Position Description

The Health and Safety Coordinator will collaborate with the WonderKids Regional Management Team and the WonderKids Administrative and Behavioral Coordinators to ensure that all appropriate safety precautions are taken and that children’s health and safety needs are met during the Summer Enrichment Program, and stocks, manages, and staffs the First Aid station.


Responsibilities:

  • Be present on site and able to assist with medical emergency and non-emergency health needs
  • Work with (collaborate and communicate with, delegate to, and receive instructions from) the Administrative and Behavior Coordinators before and during the camp session to ensure a safe, healthy camp environment for all
  • Evaluate and execute preparation of nutritious snacks based on students' dietary restrictions
  • Program staff communication
  • Family communication for any medical needs
  • On-site observation and support of children in the WonderKids Camp Program
  • Other duties assigned to support Rural Arts Collaborative

Duties:

  • Reviewing registration information and preparing informational sheets for staff about medical/allergy issues with campers
  • Planning for and overseeing afternoon snack preparation to ensure campers diet and allergy needs are met
  • Coordinating with Administrative Coordinator to purchase snacks each week
  • On-site observation and support of both staff and students, to troubleshoot health and safety needs
  • Storing and administering medication to campers as directed or needed
  • On-site program support for health and safety issues and back up support for behavior issues
  • Documenting all medical or safety incidents and interventions
  • Family communication regarding medical issues and interventions
  • Participating in job and program evaluation
  • Establishing a Medical Care Station at camp
  • Participating in staff orientation and training camp staff to recognize medical issues
  • Providing clean first aid supplies
  • Managing communicable diseases
  • Creating action plans in the event of an contagious outbreak
  • Dispensing medications
  • Attending minor injuries
  • Communicating with the parents or family members of camp attendants
  • Frequent health checks
  • Ensuring the safety of everyone at camp
  • Accompanying the sick and emergency personnel to the hospital if parents are unavailable
  • Keeping accurate medical records
  • Liaising with emergency or other medical professionals as needed
  • Providing specific health needs of campers to staff members
  • Ongoing collaboration with the behavior coordinator to offer emotional and physical support as needed
  • Attending to the supervision of campers when medical support is not required 
     

Qualifications:

  • Training as LPN, RN, Paramedic, or EMT, or equivalent training/experience
  • Current certification in CPR and First Aid
  • Basic understanding of nutrition and adapting to dietary and allergy needs
  • Basic understanding of child development and appropriate support systems
     

Estimated Hours Per Week: 

  • Summer enrichment: up to 40 hours per week, based on a five day week
  • Direct camper interaction: 6.5 hours per day
  • Preparation, paperwork, planning: 1.5 hours per day

Must be able to:

  • Lift program totes up to 30 lbs
  • Must be able to perform extensive standing and walking for 3 hours at a time
  • Carry heavier loads up to 30 lbs longer distances (from a classroom or storage area to a car in the parking lot or out to the athletic fields)
  • Must be able to set up pop up tents, folding tables, and move folding chairs and other outdoor classroom equipment
  • Must be able to bend, stoop, and reach materials
  • Must be able to play with children outdoors, hike, and remain physically active for 3 hours at a time in all weather conditions
