Shakespeare in the Arb Production Assistant

This is a student summer internship position with Matthaei Botanical Gardens and Nichols Arboretum, at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. Within the Visitor Experience department, the SITA Production Assistant position is a 6 (six) week position working closely with MBGNA staff and SITA directorial teams to manage the operations of staging a Shakespeare play for the complete run of the show. 

This position will be based primarily at Nichols Arboretum in Ann Arbor, MI and will run for six weeks beginning Wednesday, May 28, 2025 through Sunday, June 29, 2025. Work hours are 2pm to 10pm, Wednesdays through Sundays.

This internship position will support the goals of the Shakespeare in the Arb production through the following: 

  • Training and managing volunteer ushers
  • Audience management which includes preparing tickets, managing box office reports, directing attendees
  • Transporting personnel and equipment with a golf cart
  • Opening and closing the Nichols Arboretum Visitor Center

Internship Duration and Dates

  • The MBGNA summer internship takes place Monday, May 5 to Friday, August 15, 2025.
  • In order to fully participate in team collaboration and project work, selected candidates are expected to complete all dates of the internship.
  • Most internships require 32-40 hours per week.  Some internships require 15-20 hours per week.

Internship Location

  • MBGNA comprises 841 total acres, spanning across four sites, including the gardens, arboretum, a bog, and natural areas.
  • Some internships take place mainly at Matthaei Botanical Gardens, 1800 N. Dixboro Rd, Ann Arbor, MI. Some internships take place mainly at Nichols Arboretum, 1600 Washington Heights, Ann Arbor, MI 48104.
  • Many internships will take place at combined locations throughout the summer experience.
