Indigenous Outreach and Engagement Intern

The Ecological Health Network is a non-profit organization working at the intersection of ecological restoration and human health and well-being. We connect long-term ecological restoration projects and programs, so that they may learn from each other, share scientific efforts, identify key knowledge gaps, and increase the awareness of the benefits of ecological restoration among the public and policymakers.

Internship summary: This internship is part of the EHN’s Indigenous Outreach and Partnership Initiative which is funded through the Christopher Reynolds Foundation. The intern will work directly with our Program Director and Director of Operations to support our efforts to build the capacity of the newly formed Northeast Seed Network (NSN).  NSN focuses on improving the access of ecologically appropriate native seeds and plants to restore healthy ecosystems in the U.S. Northeast and Northern Mid-Atlantic states. The intern will help coordinate and direct outreach to Indigenous leaders to build trust, facilitate communication, and work towards incorporating Indigenous knowledge and science into seed and plant amplification and use for a wide range of restorative activities.

This role will also support efforts to provide training and resources to Indigenous communities, helping to build their capacity for seed collection, native plant production, and ecological restoration. This will help the NSN respond to federal recommendations for engaging Indigenous communities in seed supply chains and restoration initiatives.

We are looking for an intern with strong outreach and engagement skills, firm knowledge about regional environmental issues, and a background working with Indigenous communities and Tribal governments. Candidates must be able to take initiative, think creatively, and demonstrate an ability to work well in a team setting and on their own with minimal supervision.

Responsibilities and time commitment: Intern should be available at 10-20 hours per week from April – December 2025. The intern will contribute to our initiatives by communicating with current and prospective network partners and members, participating in working groups, and developing materials for outreach and engagement needs.

  • 3+ years of experience working with Indigenous communities.
