Internship Overview

This internship offers a unique opportunity to contribute to the City of Lexington’s commitment to equity and inclusion. The intern will conduct data-driven research and analysis to inform policy and practice related to workforce equity and spending. The intern will complete the following projects.

  1. Workforce Equity Analysis: Analyze city employee data, including demographics (race, gender, etc.), job classifications, and compensation. Compare this data to the demographics of the Lexington workforce as a whole (relevant data will be provided by the City). Determine if there is statistical alignment and disparities in representation. This will involve quantitative analysis and the preparation of clear and concise reports summarizing findings.
  2. Discretionary Spending Analysis: Research and document the City of Lexington’s discretionary spending. This will involve reviewing budget documents and financial reports to identify the total amount of discretionary funds and how these funds are allocated across different departments and vendors. The intern will analyze current vendor demographics to identify the percentage of contracts awarded to minority- and women-owned businesses. The intern will also research best practices for diversifying vendor pools and promoting equitable bidding processes.

These two projects will result in a comprehensive report that establishes a baseline for workforce and discretionary spending equity.

Qualifications

  • Strong analytical and research skills, including experience with data analysis and interpretation.
  • Ability to work with large datasets and use statistical software (e.g., Excel, R, SPSS) is preferred.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to present complex information clearly and concisely.
  • Demonstrated interest in diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
