Upward Bound Residential Mentor
About Upward Bound:
Upward Bound is one of eight TRIO programs across the nation. “The Federal TRIO Programs (TRIO) are Federal outreach and student services programs designed to identify and provide services for individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds. TRIO includes eight programs targeted to serve and assist low-income individuals, first-generation college students, and individuals with disabilities to progress through the academic pipeline from middle school to post baccalaureate programs.”
Position Overview:
- RMs serve as mentors, guides, and resources to Upward Bound students in support of Summer Academy programming supervised by Upward Bound’s Academic Coordinators.
- If on breakfast duty, an RM starts in the morning waking students and accompanying students to breakfast.
- RMs do not work again until the evening. Every day can vary depending on programming, but RMs start during the daily staff meeting. Throughout the evening, programming may include on-campus activities such as swimming, the gym, sports, crafts, movies, and more. RMs oversee off-campus activities, which average once per week, as well as detention, study halls, and more.
- RMs also run student floor time in the dorms, attend regular staff meetings in the evening, and relay information to their assigned group of around 10 students during individual group meetings. After programming ends, students have floor time until curfew. RMs do room checks. If scheduled for the night shift, RMs remain present and attentive to ensure students keep curfew and are entertained and academically supported. At the end of shifts RMs will do rounds of the entire building. If on call, RMs will be on call till 2 AM and will complete rounds including the basement.
