Summary about Organization
Upward Bound is one of eight TRIO programs across the nation. Specifically, “the Federal TRIO Programs (TRIO) are Federal outreach and student services programs designed to identify and provide experiences, opportunities, and resources for individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds. TRIO includes eight programs targeted to serve and assist low-income individuals, first-generation college students, and individuals with disabilities to progress through the academic pipeline from middle school to post baccalaureate programs.”

Position Summary 

PMs accompany students throughout the day to all their classes, observe and enforce appropriate behavior, enforce safety regulations and emergency procedures. The schedule for classes Monday through Thursday stays consistent.  Every day, however, can vary on student facing programming that happens after classes. PMs will accompany students to lunch.  During classes, PMs will assist UB staff and teachers to facilitate learning and prepare for programming between 4 - 6 PM.  

PMs will assist with videography and photography with participants and families during class and afternoon activities. PMs will also maintain the daily merit store and other marketing and communications projects: newsletter, revising flyers, collecting waivers.  

PMs during dinner (6 PM) will participate in a daily staff meeting going through the events of the day, problems, concerns within the last 24 hours, and assist in planning programming from the week.  

PMs on Friday afternoons will assist with student check-out procedures, ensuring that students and parents sign out.  

 

Roles and Responsibilities 

Student Supervision & Safety  

  • Ability to observe behavior, enforce appropriate safety regulations and emergency procedures, and apply appropriate behavior-management of UB programs
  • Assist participants and Residential Mentors implement their daily program while providing continual support and supervision of all participants
  • Chaperone field trips and cultural outings
  • Follow training protocols regarding safety concerns and behavioral misconduct
  • Check on student clothing appropriateness

Mentoring 

  • Serve as a positive role model for participants by listening, teaching, and intentionally being a part of the program
  • Meet student needs through problem-solving and conflict resolution
  • Maintain exemplar behavior, actions, and language as a role model to UB students
  • Use merits and demerits, implementing tactics learned throughout training week

Academics 

  • Serve as an assistant to instructors and summer staff
  • Encourage academic success and support student learning
  • Oversee daily study hall sessions

Professional Development/Training 

  • Participate in a weeklong training session with other summer staff members.
  • Attend and participate in required daily (M-Th) staff meetings
  • Work collaboratively with PM team and Upward Bound staff
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Expectations 

  • As a Program Mentor, you are representing the program even when you are off the clock.
  • To request shift changes, one must be in contact with the Assistant Director at least 24 hours in advance.
  • Utilize critical thinking and problem-solving skills as needs arise
  • Work well with others and demonstrate initiative
  • Always demonstrate service leadership by prioritizing program and willingly engage with students
  • Exude professionalism in both language and dress around Upward Bound students and staff.
  • Maintaining merit store, special events, and other marketing and communications projects
  • Assist with video, photography, communications with participants and families

Qualifications and Education Requirements 

  • Maintain a college GPA of 2.5 or higher
  • Strongly prefer rising Juniors and Seniors
  • Students with college leadership experience and campus involvement
  • Must be able to effectively work and communicate with high school youth
  • Must have a high level of maturity, be self-disciplined, and able to work on a team
  • Must have familiarity with and sensitivity to the needs of high school students
  • Mentoring experience highly preferred
  • Proficiency in social trends is preferred
