3-D Designer Graduate Intern 

Design– Summer 2025 

The MFA Boston’s Design Department manages the design and planning of the Museum’s galleries and public spaces. These responsibilities include the 3-D design (architectural space) and the 2-D design (graphic design) environments. 

The Design Department is seeking a highly motivated, graduate-level intern to assist with the architectural interior visualizations for upcoming gallery renovations and exhibitions. The successful candidate will collaborate with the Design Director as well as the Exhibition Designers to determine solutions and avenues of exploration for the successful communication of design ideas stemming from collaboration with curatorial and interpretative staff. 

This position working within the Design Department at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, offers a unique opportunity for an Architecture graduate student to gain invaluable experience by learning first-hand about Museum exhibition design practices in one of the world’s most renowned museums. 

The ideal candidates must be able to work onsite 5 days, 25-35 hours per week, (within Monday through Friday, 9am-5pm parameters), from June 16 through August 22, 2025, including attendance at the Museum Pathways & Practices professional development course from 12:30-2:30pm on the following Thursdays: June 26; July 3; July 10; July 17; July 24; July 31; Aug 7; Aug 14; and Aug 21.

The intern will be paid at a rate of $19.95 per hour, and will receive a $90 per month transportation subsidy and a housing subsidy totaling $1,500. (*Both subsidies are subject to taxes.)

Responsibilities

Over the course of the internship, the 3-D Design Intern will: 

  • Provide virtual and physical maquettes of scaled images in 2-D and 3-D to use in digital models as well as physical models 
  • Prepare, export, and combine various CAD files for use in rendering software and VR platform. 
  • Research new and innovative rendering software and VR programs/plug-ins to provide more resolved presentations of ideas and concepts 
  • Contribute ideas and insights during Design department meetings/reviews for potential innovative and cost-effective solutions. 

Qualifications

  • Enrollment in a recognized graduate architectural program concurrent with internship period 
  • *Submission of a portfolio of related completed projects 
  • Keen interest in Art and Design 
  • Good Communication skills 
  • Sharp manual skills to produce physical models and maquettes; includes use of hot glue gun, xacto knives and building fome-cor models. 
  • Expertise with CAD programs for Mac and PC. Should include Vectorworks and/or Rhino. 
  • Familiarity with Mac and PC platforms and graphics software including Adobe Creative Suite 
  • Detailed based goals and aesthetic practices 
  • Ability to commit 25-35 hours per week (within Monday through Friday, 9am-5pm parameters), from June 16 through Aug 22, 2025, including attendance at the Museum Pathways & Practices professional development course from 12:30-2:30pm on the following Thursdays: June 26; July 3; July 10; July 17; July 24; July 31; Aug 7; Aug 14; and Aug 21.  
  • Ability to attend orientation on Mon, June 16, 2025, 10am to 3:30pm.
