Civil Engineer

THE CITY OF PORT HURON IS CURRENTLY ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS FOR THE POSITION OF CIVIL ENGINEER.

 

We are seeking a candidate with a Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, with basic knowledge of the design principles associated with municipal engineering and other public works projects.

 

CIVIL ENGINEER

 

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:  To perform professional civil engineering work in the office and in the field in connection with the design, oversight, management, investigation, development and construction of civil engineering projects, and to perform related work as required.

 

SUPERVISION RECEIVED:  Work is performed under the general supervision of the Engineering Manager or other designated official.

 

SUPERVISION EXERCISED:  Supervision may be exercised over technical or other personnel.

 

TYPICAL EXAMPLES OF WORK:  An employee in this class may be called upon to do any or all of the following: (These examples do not include all of the tasks which the employee may be expected to perform.)

 

  • Assist in the preparation of detailed plans and specifications for municipal engineering and other public works projects.
  • Assist in the preparation of cost estimates of municipal engineering and other public works projects.
  • Conduct miscellaneous research on items such as traffic, lighting, future paving, water and sewer system improvements.
  • Inspect the construction, maintenance and repair of municipal engineering and other public works projects to assure conformity with plans and specifications.
  • Prepare and maintain detailed records of public utility and infrastructure installations, inspections and other public works activities.
  • Coordinate with City personnel and professional engineering firms in relation to municipal engineering or other public works projects.
  • Receive and respond to inquiries and complaints from residents, business owners contractors and others.
  • Prepare correspondence and reports.
  • Assist in preparation of regulatory agency compliance reports such as asset management plans and others as required.
  • May perform duties associated with gathering and organizing GIS data, using PASER rated road systems, Roadsoft and ArcMap.
  • Perform related work as required.

 

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS FOR EMPLOYMENT:

 

  • Reasonable knowledge of civil engineering principles and practices, particularly as related to municipal engineering and other public works projects.
  • Reasonable knowledge of construction methods, materials and equipment, as related to streets, sewers, water, buildings and other public works construction.
  • Reasonable knowledge of requirements and processes of the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) and Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy (EGLE), preferred, but not required.
  • Ability to read and interpret plans and specifications.
  • Experience utilizing computer-aided design and drafting (CADD) system(s).
  • Ability to establish and maintain satisfactory working relationships with the public, other employees, consultants and other governmental agencies.

 

An employee in this class, upon appointment, shall the equivalent of the following education, training and experience:

 

  • Graduation with a Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited college or university of recognized standing with experience in responsible civil engineering or directly related field.
  • Several years’ responsible experience in civil engineering or directly related field, preferred, but not required.
  • Registered Professional Engineer in the State of Michigan, preferred, but not required.

 

Working Hours:  Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.

 

Salary Range:  Commensurate with license and experience, $63,000 - $94,000 annually
