Laboratory Intern

The Suffolk County Water Authority is seeking five second or third-year college students for a hands-on summer internship in our state-of-the-art Laboratory located in Hauppauge. Internships are available in our Chemistry and Microbiology laboratories.

Chemistry Intern

Responsibilities:

  • Performs instrumental analysis of routine water samples, reviews analytical data, and enters results into a LIM’s database with supervision.
  • Prepares reagents, calibration standards, and QC samples for assigned methods.
  • Performs routine instrument maintenance and assists in troubleshooting problems. 
  • Sample preparation and extraction. 
  • B.A. or B.S. degree in Chemistry or related science with 24 Chemistry credits required. 

Bacteriology Intern:

Responsibilities:

  • Perform all types of bacterial analyses of routine samples, review results and enter analytical results into a LIM’s database with supervision.
  • Ability to work outdoors in all environmental conditions and maintain good aseptic technique while collecting routine samples.
  • B.A. or B.S. degree in Biology or related science, with at least twenty-four credits in Biology. 

Requirements:

  • No prior job experience is necessary.
  • Knowledge of Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS) helpful.
  • Proficient in MS Office.
  • Must be goal oriented, organized and motivated to learn.
  • Must be a Suffolk County resident and possess a valid driver’s license.

This is a paid internship within a range of $17.00-21.00/hr depending on year. Employment will begin in May and continue through mid-August. Work hours are to be determined, with a maximum of 28 hours per week.
