Visitor Engagement Internship/Fellowship - Summer 2025

Overview

The Visitor Engagement Intern/Fellow will plan and execute three visitor activity days at the Minidoka National Historic Site during Summer 2025, to support Friends of Minidoka’s mission to preserve and protect the lessons and legacy of the unjust incarceration of Japanese Americans during WWII at the historic Minidoka War Relocation Center. Friends of Minidoka is the non-profit partner of Minidoka National Historic Site, a unit of the National Park Service located in Jerome, Idaho. This internship offers valuable experience in education, outreach, and community relations. This is a pilot project which will provide insights and strategies for future visitor engagement at the site.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Research, plan and execute three engaging and hands-on educational activities, crafts, or projects that deepen the visitor experience at Minidoka NHS, under the guidance and supervision of Friends of Minidoka staff.
  • Provide direct, hands-on support to Minidoka NHS visitors with activities.
  • Create an activity resource file, including materials lists, instructions, and any related educational materials.
  • Create content to publicize and/or document activities for various communication channels, including social media posts, blog articles, email newsletters (also includes a written reflection at the conclusion of the internship/fellowship).
  • Other duties related to the project as assigned.

Preferred Transferable Competencies and Skills

  • Ability to effectively navigate change and be able to adapt plans as needed.
  • Commitment to social justice and the ability to apply a lens of equity, intersectionality and anti-racism.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines.
  • Experience in public programs or group education. 
  • Preference for students studying education, history, Asian American studies, or related field.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Current undergraduate or graduate student in education, history, communications, public relations, or a related field.
  • A demonstrated interest in education, history, social justice, or community engagement.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Ability to engage with the general public in a professional and culturally competent manner.
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills with strong attention to detail.
  • Ability to access a computer or laptop for video conferencing and internet access.  
  • Must have a valid driver’s license.
  • Must pass a criminal background check. 

Learning Objectives

  • Gain experience in developing and implementing hands-on educational activities. 
  • Build community outreach and engagement skills.
  • A deeper understanding of the history of the Minidoka National Historic Site and its significance.

Schedule

  • 90 hours for 2 credits (to be determined and approved in consultation with Friends of Minidoka staff and academic advisor, if necessary).  
  • Hours are generally Monday through Friday, with some weekends as needed.

Compensation

  • $17 - $20 per hour, depending upon experience.
  • Reimbursement for mileage based on standard federal rate.

Location

  • Remote & in-person work hybrid position, but weekly in-person meetings may be required.
  • Internship candidates must be able to travel by car to the Minidoka National Historic Site, either in a personal vehicle or with Friends of Minidoka staff.
