Job Description – Summer Conference Staff

The Summer Conference Staff exists for the purpose of supporting the Summer Conference Program in all residence halls throughout the summer months (May 12, 2025 through August 24, 2025 ). The Summer Staff Program uses the residence halls as a hotel-like service during the summer to accommodate visitors of the University. The Summer Staff Program seeks to ensure that all visitors to campus will have a quality experience at The University of Akron. Summer Staff members are trained to provide a high standard of hospitality and customer service to each guest and will act as an ambassador on behalf of the Department of Residence Life and Housing as well as The University of Akron. 

Interested candidates should submit their applications no later than Monday, March 10 at 11:59 pm.  Please note this summer, we will have two versions of the summer conference position: 

  • 20 "Full time" Conference Staff
    • $11.75 per hour
    • up to 29 hours per week
    • 4-bedroom Exchange Street Apartment with roommates
    • No other on-campus employment permitted
  • 10 "Part-Time" Conference Staff
    • $11.75 per hour
    • Up to 10 hours per week, EXCEPT
      • 2 weeks before and 1 week after AA conference — 29 hours for each of those 3 weeks (May 25 - June 21)
    • 4-bedroom Exchange Street Apartment with roommates
    • Other on campus employment permitted, except three weeks in June around AA conference

POSITION ELIGIBILITY

Before applicants begin the application process, they must be eligible to be employed for this summer job opportunity.

Successful candidates must:

  • Be a confirmed University of Akron student.
  • Have a minimum 2.50 cumulative grade point average at the end of the fall semester to successfully progress through the screening process.
  • Have a minimum 2.50 cumulative grade point average at the end of the spring semester to successfully be employed by the Department of Residence Life and Housing.
  • Be in good conduct standing with the University prior to and during employment, as discerned by the Associate Director of Residence Life and Housing in conjunction with the Office Student Conduct & Community Standards.
  • Successfully pass a state and/or federal background check (cost covered by University) as a condition of employment.

Interested candidates must also meet one of the following enrollment scenarios:

  • Enrolled in Spring 2025 & Fall 2025, OR 
  • Enrolled in Spring 2025, Summer 2025 & Fall 2025, OR 
  • Enrolled in Summer 2025

DUTIES: CONFERENCE

  • Assist in preparation of conference materials (brochures, flyers, and keys/swipe cards)
  • Guest check-in/check-out; management of key inventory/swipe cards, group roster, space sheets, etc.
  • Preparing guest rooms as needed, including the reporting of maintenance/custodial concerns and monitoring for unresolved issues
  • Operating 24-hour desk as needed (conference-specific)
  • Be familiar with University and departmental emergency response procedure
  • Responsible for the acceptance/pick-up of linen from an external company; maintain inventory of stored linen
  • Assist Residence Life and Housing Department for academic year preparation & move in
  • Moving furniture, bunking, and lofting beds as needed
  • Be familiar with University information/policies and be able to communicate that to conference guests; Provide information (transportation, restaurants, local attractions) about the Akron area to conference guests
  • Act as on-call duty staff (10:00 pm – 4:00 am) when needed
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule that changes dynamically with the workday
  • Other duties as assigned

DUTIES: AMBASSADOR

  • Be knowledgeable of the Residence Life and Housing operations and facilities; be familiar with University information/policies and be able to communicate that to prospective students & guests
  • Set-up/tear-down of residence hall tour rooms
  • Provide residence hall/campus tours to prospective residents Monday through Friday (and Saturday upon request and advanced notice) or as needed on scheduled Advising & Registration (NSO) events
  • Other duties as assigned

DUTIES: IN-HALL

  • Promote and maintain a residence hall environment that meets the physical safety, emotional security, and comfort needs of all Exchange Street residents Conduct a floor/area meeting as deemed necessary by the building coordinator
  • Assist with responses to immediate community concerns such as fire, environmental safety issues, personal or property safety issues, and other topics assigned by a supervisor
  • Provide basic personal care and counsel for students experiencing student crisis or exhibiting need
  • Make student referrals to counselors, advisors, and professional staff as necessary
  • Respond immediately, and directly, to crisis situations taking appropriate action in accordance with policies and procedures
  • Follow the directions of the professional staff member on call and all professional staff members. Report all pertinent information immediately
  • Notify building coordinator of all counseling contacts
  • Abide by, and enforce all University policies and procedures, residence hall policies, and local, state, and federal laws as outlined in the Student Code of Conduct and Residence Hall Handbook. Under no circumstances should a summer staff ignore the violation of a regulation or policy committed by a resident, guest, or fellow summer staff, nor violate regulations or policies that residents are expected to follow. Summer staff should always confront behavior inconsistent with these policies.
  • Consult with the building supervisor before, while, and after enforcing policies and procedures
  • Assist the building supervisor, and University staff, in the implementation of the University conduct process when called upon to do so
  • Maintain accurate records of confrontation and student behavior inconsistent with the Student Code of Conduct and the Residence Hall Handbook by submitting incident reports
  • Participate in fire drills/alarms. Lead and organize residents and/or guests during and after fire alarms, tornado warnings, and other community crisis
  • Assist with building coordinator with periodic room inspections, as needed
  • Other duties as assigned

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs
  • Ability to stoop and bend
  • Limited discretion about walking, standing, etc.
  • Ability to climb stairs
  • Visually assess the community/surroundings in situations that occur spontaneously and respond appropriately
  • Verbally communicate with residents and supervisors in casual and crisis interventions
  • Use and operate keys, duty phone, computer systems, and elevator
  • Access and reach locations where an incident may occur (i.e. inside student rooms, bathrooms, hallways, stairwells, elevators, building lobbies and adjacent, external areas of the residence hall surround, etc.)
  • Must be able to complete paperwork, read IDs, participate in fire-safety training, physically able to move quickly through congested and/or crowded situations and effectively communicate to a large group of people
  • Exposure to various weather conditions consistent with Ohio weather patterns
  • Ability to respond to duties at any hour and for prolonged periods of time (incident dependent)

COMPENSATION/REMUNERATION Successful candidates are paid $11.75/hour. In addition, free housing is available for summer employment. Successful candidates who do not take advantage of the housing are not additionally compensated for the decision to not reside in the hall during employment. Staff without Fall 2025 housing assignments may be moved to available spaces in August 2025 to allow for transition from summer to fall housing. Successful candidates CANNOT hold other University of Akron employment during the summer.

With advanced notice, Summer Staff will be able to be employed by New Student Orientation for New Roo Weekend. Any non-UA employment must not interfere with summer staff employment. A typical workday is Mon-Fri 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, but you will be expected to work early mornings, evenings, weekends, and duty nights as needed.

All staff are expected to work AA weekend (June 7 – June 9, 2025).

INTERVIEWS: 

After all applications are received, they will be reviewed. Due to the expected high volume of applications, not all applicants will receive an interview. In either case, you will be contacted via UA email about your status no later than March 21st by 8:00 pm. Interviews will take place March 24 - 30 for those applicants selected to be interviewed. 

DECISIONS: 

Position Offer/Decline email will be sent no later than April 4. 2025 by 8:00 pm. If offered a position, it will be your responsibility to reply to the email accepting the offer by the indicated date/time. 

TRAINING: 

Mandatory training will be held May 12-13, 2025. Please do not schedule family vacations or other outings during this time. Non-attendance at training will result in your summer staff position being rescinded. 

CONFERENCE SEASON: The 2025 conference season begins Monday, May 12, 2025, and ends Sunday, August 24, 2025.

 

All University of Akron student employees must meet the designated minimum standards as stated on the Student Employment Eligibility Chart. UA student employees must be 18 years or older at the time of their start date. Any approved remote work conducted by student employees MUST be performed within the state of Ohio.
