Housing Advocate

This is a flexible, hybrid position assisting people with housing instability and homelessness. Our scheduling allows for you to pursue your passions – academic, artistic, or otherwise – while learning about housing policy and programs. Our certificate program prepares you for leadership in housing advocacy.

As a housing advocate, you learn to assist with housing research and applications; as you move through our certificate program, you become involved with tenant education, resource development, advocacy, and other housing-related matters. You learn to collaborate with community organizations and government agencies to promote affordable and accessible housing options. 

We have working partnerships with Gichitwaa Kateri Catholic Church in Minneapolis, Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe Twin Cities Office, and Recovery Cafe Frogtown in Saint Paul. 

Please highlight any experience with the following:

  • An active understanding of addiction and recovery
  • An active understanding of housing instability
  • Knowledge of an indigenous American language or lived experience in indigenous America
  • Bilingual or multilingual skills, including English dialects

Our certificate program for employees includes close mentoring and thoughtful instruction. Once our employees complete our certificate program (one-two years), they become competitive for leadership positions in housing advocacy.  

Qualifications 

  • Interest in housing laws, tenant responsibilities, HUD policies and programs
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work collaboratively and independently
  • Empathy and sensitivity to people experiencing housing instability
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information with discretion
