Court Interpreter (Spanish/English)

Court Interpreter 1 (Spanish/English) - Conditionally Approved/Trainee (Level 1 - Conditionally Approved/Trainee)
Minimum Salary: $61,211.50 
Maximum Salary A: $102,150.53 
Maximum Salary B: $97,043.01
Employees at this level act as trainees and interpret proceedings of limited legal significance or limited linguistic complexity and may prepare draft translations of forms, letters and other court-related documents.
 
Court Interpreter 1 (Spanish/English) - Journey (Level 2a-Journey) 
Minimum Salary: $71,937.01
Maximum Salary A: $102,150.53
Maximum Salary B: $97,043.01
Employees at this level interpret legal proceedings and translate forms, letters and other court-related documents.
 
Court Interpreter 2 (Spanish/English) - Master (Level 3-Mastery) 
Minimum Salary: $76,253.21
Maximum Salary A: $115.099.18 
Maximum Salary B: $109,344.22
Employees at this level interpret complex legal proceedings and translate forms, letters and other court-related documents.

 

SALARY: 
For newly hired individuals, the starting salary will normally be at the minimum of the salary range. For current Judiciary employees, salary upon promotion or advancement will be an increase of 5% of base salary, not to exceed the maximum of the range, or the minimum salary of the band/level, whichever is greater. Judiciary employees hired prior to June 3, 2014, are considered Schedule A.  Newly hired individuals, and Judiciary employees hired on or after June 3, 2014, are considered Schedule B.

 

EXAMPLE OF DUTIES: 

Vicinage 15 Cumberland, Gloucester, and Salem Counties is seeking a detail-oriented, bilingual (Spanish/English) professional who is motivated to perform and succeed in a fast-paced and challenging environment. Under the direction of the Court Executive 2B (Assistant Trial Court Administrator/Operations Division Manager), the successful candidate must be able to interpret in the three modes of interpretation (sight, consecutive, and simultaneous) in court proceedings, quasi-judicial hearings, complimentary dispute resolution events, court support services, weddings and other court­ related events in person or via a telecommunication device. Other responsibilities include but are not limited to: producing translations either in draft or final form of documents such as official forms, public signs, notices, posters, form letters, job applications and correspondence; providing introductory information regarding the role of the interpreter to pro se parties and attorneys requiring interpreting services; participating in study and training activities in a group or individually in order to develop and maintain interpreting and translating skills and techniques; assisting court employees and others in scheduling interpreting services; and orienting, scheduling and invoicing contract interpreters. Performs related duties as required.

NOTE: Court Interpreter 2 only: Interpret high profile and complex trials, as well as trials involving crimes of the first degree and mentor Court Interpreters.

  • Travel within the tri-county vicinage will be required.
  • This position may be reassigned to another county within the vicinage.

Remote Work: The Judiciary currently offers a hybrid work schedule, and this position may qualify for up to 2 days of remote work outside of Judiciary buildings. To participate in this program, in addition to installing a multifactor authentication app on your phone or tablet, you will be required to have high speed home internet access.

Regular and predictable physical presence at the worksite is an essential function of this position.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:
Eligibility: Eligible applicants are court interpreters approved by the New Jersey Administrative Office of the Courts (AOC).  AOC approved interpreters include interpreters who have passed the written and performance oral exams of the National Center for State Courts administered by the AOC or an equivalent test administered by a member state of the Council of Language Access Coordinators; or who possess the Court Interpreter Certification from the Administrative Office of the United States Courts.

Note: Prior to translating documents, incumbents must pass the translation test administered by the AOC.


Training Period: Court Interpreter 1 - Conditionally Approved/Trainees will have two years from the date of employment to test up to a higher level in order to maintain employment. Court Interpreter 1-Conditionally Approved/Trainees will be on a probationary period until they test up to a higher Level.
