Research Assistant, Research Specialist, Focused on Maternal Health Research, Public Health, Transportation Planning

I am the founder of STORC, a start-up company. I would like to explore the possibility of engaging students in an exciting research opportunity centered on maternal mobility and transportation access issues that will help our start-up focus on maternal health outcomes and health equity. 

 

Below is a potential Summary of what our start-up is seeking.

 

Individuals in this role will research to understand the complex challenges women face in accessing transportation to healthcare appointments and other essential services during pregnancy and the postpartum period. The research aims to identify barriers, understand their impact on maternal health, and contribute to developing effective solutions. 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Research Design and Execution:
    • Develop research proposals and protocols to study maternal mobility issues, considering factors like geographic location (rural vs. urban), socio-economic status, cultural background, and specific health conditions.
    • Conduct quantitative and qualitative research methods, including surveys, interviews, focus groups, and analysis of relevant data sets.
    • Analyze data related to transportation access, healthcare utilization, and maternal health outcomes, potentially using statistical software like SPSS, SAS, or R.
  • Data Management and Analysis:
    • Build and manage complex datasets from various sources, ensuring data accuracy and integrity.
    • Analyze data to identify trends, disparities, and contributing factors related to transportation barriers and their impact on maternal health.
    • Prepare data summaries, reports, and presentations for various audiences, including researchers, policymakers, and community stakeholders.
  • Collaboration and Partnerships:
    • Collaborate with internal and external partners, including healthcare providers, community organizations, government agencies, and research institutions.
    • Participate in team meetings, conferences, and stakeholder engagement activities.
  • Dissemination of Findings:
    • Contribute to the drafting of research papers, reports, and presentations for publication and dissemination through appropriate channels.
    • Participate in efforts to translate research findings into actionable recommendations for improving maternal health outcomes and promoting health equity. 

Qualifications:

  • Education: Third or Fourth year undergrad candidate, Bachelor's or Master's degree in a relevant field such as Public Health, Social Sciences, Epidemiology, Transportation Planning, or a related discipline is typically required. A PhD or equivalent doctoral degree may be required for senior or investigator-level positions.
  • Experience:
    • Relevant research experience, including experience with quantitative and/or qualitative research methods.
    • Experience working with data sets and data analysis software is often preferred.
    • Experience in maternal and child health, public health, or related fields is highly desirable.
  • Skills:
    • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate research findings effectively to diverse audiences.
    • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
    • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
    • Knowledge of concepts and frameworks related to social determinants of health and health equity is beneficial.
