Community Engagement & Government Affairs Internship (Part-Time)

About the Department

The Public Affairs Department consists of NYRR’s Media and Public Relations, Government Relations, and Community Engagement teams. Media and Public Relations share the stories of NYRR participants, events, and programs to drive awareness to NYRR’s organization and mission, while also enhancing and protecting the company’s reputation. Government Relations & Community Engagement manages NYRR's relationships with local and state elected officials, and governmental agencies, as well as its relationships with community stakeholders, from our runners and clubs to like-minded organizations. Overall, representing NYRR's interests, Public Affairs serves as a centralized bridge and internal partner for the organization and governmental and community partners.

About the Internship

The New York Road Runners Internship Program is a paid, 21-week experience spanning from Monday, June 16, 2025 to Friday, November 14, 2025, in which interns will learn from the best in the non-profit business.

 

Interns will work collaboratively with professionals in their field of study and will have opportunities to network across the organization. The program will include professional development events and a chance to make a direct impact on the communities in New York City by working select events. Interns will receive onboarding and training to learn about NYRR and gain the knowledge needed to best perform in their role.

The intern will play a pivotal role in fostering relationships with key stakeholders, local organizations, and community leaders. By participating in marathon events, meetings, and outreach programs, they will help strengthen our ties within the community, cultivating a positive image and reinforcing our commitment to social responsibility. In collaboration with experienced team members, this individual will have the chance to contribute creatively to the design and execution of our engagement in the community. This hands-on experience will not only enrich their professional development but also infuse the department with new, innovative methods to connect with the community. 

 

Intern Responsibilities (primary and secondary duties):  

  • Support team on data collection, creating community contact lists, and communicating street race information to all stakeholder’s community boards, chambers of commerce, businesses, local elected officials, etc.)
  • Assisting in all event production leading to the TCSNYC Marathon, such as the NYRR Streakers Events and the Blue Line Painting
  • Organizing and tracking all event materials
  • Assisting in set-up related to all departmental events (as needed)
  • Assisting with credentialing for all local government officials and guests at the TCSNYC Marathon

Internship Schedule 

Interns are expected to work 25 hours weekly, Monday to Friday, in a hybrid work setting. This role will also have weekend work (Saturdays or Sundays) to support NYRR events. Dates will be determined at the start of the internship and availability will be taken into account.

Internship Requirements 

  • Sophomore or junior in college, working towards an undergraduate or graduate degree in Public Communication, Political Science, or related field
  • Familiar with NYC communities across all five boroughs a plus
  • Ability to work occasional weekends or evenings
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook)
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • The ability to be outside in the elements for the duration of event shifts

Salary: $22/hour
