About the Department

The Development & Philanthropy Department leads the creation and execution of NYRR’s annual plan to secure financial support from individuals, foundations, and corporations. The department is responsible for expanding and diversifying the organization’s funder base, furthering the potential for future fundraising efforts, and the retention of the growing base of donors. Our NYRR Team for Kids (TFK) team oversees the TFK program of adult runners who commit to fundraising for NYRR youth and community programs. Our NYRR Membership team leads our membership program which enhances runners’ engagement with the running community and their experience at NYRR events.

About the Internship

The New York Road Runners Internship Program is a paid, 21-week experience spanning from Monday, June 16, 2025 to Friday, November 14, 2025, in which interns will learn from the best in the non-profit business. 

Interns will work collaboratively with professionals in their field of study and will have opportunities to network across the organization. The program will include professional development events and a chance to make a direct impact on the communities in New York City by working select events. Interns will receive onboarding and training to learn about NYRR and gain the knowledge needed to best perform in their role. 

Team for Kids is a group of dedicated adult runners who raise funds around premier endurance runner events to support NYRR’s Youth and Community Impact Programs. The Team for Kids (TFK) Communication and Community Engagement Intern will support the creation and administering of all TFK fundraising, team training, and operations communications and fundraising resources offered to members of TFK’s summer and fall teams, most notably the TCS New York City Marathon, to help them reach and exceed their fundraising goal while training to participate in the Marathon.

The intern will also support TFK’s engagement with both current and alumni members through social media, email, and virtual and in-person events. This includes helping to plan and participate in 2025 TCS New York City Marathon race week and race day events.

 

Intern Responsibilities (primary and secondary duties):

  • Draft runner communications, including weekly emails to active fundraising teams
  • Regularly engage with TFK community through social media channels and work to grow following
  • Assist in planning and execution of TFK engagement events, including clinics and in-person training during the TCS New York City Marathon Season
  • Created and edit power point slides for informational sessions and webinars
  • Participate in planning for and executions of TFK’s TCS New York City Marathon’s race week and race day events
  • Support our volunteer mentor program and match current fundraisers with a Team for Kids mentor
  • Support creation and administration of both new and current fundraising resources, including fundraising tips, templates, and individual consultations
  • Brainstorm and support Out-of-Town Runner connection opportunities
  • Participate in new initiatives to connect with first time TFK and marathon runners
  • Manage office merchandise inventory
  • Participate in event packing at NYRR warehouse
  • Support data transition and accuracy as we transition to a new CRM

 

Internship Schedule 

Interns are expected to work 25 hours weekly, Monday to Friday, in a hybrid work setting. This role will also have weekend work (Saturdays or Sundays) to support NYRR events. Dates will be determined at the start of the internship and availability will be taken into account.

Internship Requirements:

  • Sophomore or junior in college, working towards a degree in Business Administration, Marketing, Hospitality, Sports/Athletics, Communications, English, Nonprofit Management
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook)
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

Other Requirements:

  • Strong interest and skill with social media
  • Comfort interacting with runners via written and in-person communication
  • Interest in the sport of running, general fitness and athletic
  • The ability to be outside in the elements for the duration of event shifts

Salary: $22/hour
