Department/Office: Medical Mutts Service Dogs
Hourly Wage: $14/hr. (Depending on experience)

General Purpose/Agency Overview

Medical Mutts Service Dogs is dedicated to rescuing and training dogs to become service animals. Our Canine Care department plays a crucial role in ensuring the well-being and happiness of our service dogs in training by providing comprehensive care, promoting health, and maintaining a clean and safe environment.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Canine Care (70%)

  • Provide daily care, including feeding, watering, and grooming of dogs.
  • Monitor and document health and behavior and report any concerns to the Canine Care Supervisor.
  • Administer medications and ensure proper hygiene and enrichment activities.
  • Maintain clean and sanitized kennels and common areas.

Safety and Security (20%)

  • Follow safety guidelines and proper handling techniques to ensure a secure environment.
  • Identify and address potential hazards promptly.

Communication and Collaboration (15%)

  • Communicate with the Canine Care Supervisor and team about dogs' needs and changes.
  • Collaborate to maintain consistent care routines and provide customer service to visitors.

Record-Keeping and Documentation (5%)

  • Record and organize information on feeding, medications, and behavioral observations.

What Students Will Learn

  • Canine Care Techniques: Hands-on experience in feeding, grooming, and administering medications.
  • Safety and Handling: Proper techniques for safely interacting with dogs of all types.
  • Communication and Teamwork: Develop communication skills and teamwork within a professional setting.
  • Record-Keeping: Learn to maintain and organize detailed records.
  • Enrichment and Behavior: Implement activities for dogs' mental and physical well-being.
  • Industry Knowledge: Stay updated on trends and best practices in dog care.

Qualifications

Required

  • Previous experience working with dogs in a professional setting 
  • Genuine passion for dogs and their well-being, with a compassionate and patient approach.
  • Basic knowledge of canine behavior, health, and care practices.
  • Ability to follow instructions and adhere to established protocols and procedures.
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to collaborate effectively within a team environment.
  • Excellent attention to detail and ability to prioritize tasks in a dynamic work environment.
  • Physical stamina to perform moderate to heavy physical labor, including lifting and moving up to 50 pounds.
  • Flexibility to work weekends, holidays, and occasional overtime as required.

Preferred

  • Experience in dog grooming and administering medications.
  • Familiarity with enrichment activities and techniques for dogs.
  • Previous experience in a non-profit or animal care organization.
