Intern, Equestrian Programs
Under the supervision of the Executive Director and the other GHERF support staff, interns will help in the delivery and management of the equestrian inclusionary programs. Specific duties will be discussed during interviews but may include the following: teaching lessons, administrative duties, event planning, and horse schooling and care. Interns will also be responsible for interacting with staff, volunteers, participants, and their families.
Additional Job Duties:
· Implement and supervise safety/risk management protocols in a caring and fun environment for participants, volunteers, and staff.
· Teach riding lessons (ie: Hunter, Jumper, Dressage or Western – depending on intern’s specialization) as well as adaptive, therapeutic sessions modified to needs of the rider.
· Conduct Pre-lesson activities as assigned such as complete participant assessments, create lesson plans, review progress notes, prepare for lesson activities, lunge horses.
· Conduct post-lesson activities such as discuss lesson with parents and volunteers, put tack away, write progress notes on each student, clean barn, feed horses. • Complete evaluations and report cards to assess participant abilities.
· Create a nurturing, positive and professional environment while promoting program policies and procedures amongst staff, volunteers, and community.
· Assist in daily care of horses as assigned: Schooling, feeding, medical care when necessary.
· Attend required staff/internship meetings and trainings.
· Assist with special events (ie: fundraising & horse shows) including pre and post event tasks as assigned.
· Assist with summer camps and special groups.
· Assist in training volunteers as requested.
Qualifications
· Undergraduate or graduate degree in one or more of the following (ie: Equine Business Management, Psychology, Riding Instruction, Training the Horses, Equine Science, & Therapeutic Riding)
· Experience working with children, youth, adults, or individuals with, or in an educational setting is an asset.
· Completion of a Virginia background check (Level I & II) & valid driver’s license from the state that you reside.
· Basic computer processing skills including MS office required.
· Ability to give and receive feedback in a positive manner.
· Commitment to all responsibilities and expectations.
· Current CPR / First Aid certifications. (Minimum)
· Ability to work outside year-round and lift at least 50 pounds

We are currently accepting applications for the Spring/Summer 2025. The deadline is open enrollment. A stipend (for expenses) and on-site housing provided free of cost. The GHERF team will guide and assist you in preparation of the PATH, International certifications (CRTI & ESMHL)
Good Hope’s equestrian facility includes impeccable stables boarding 9 program horses, 6 open paddocks, a 180 * 80 indoor riding arena, an outdoor riding area, riding trails, an outdoor picnic area, accessible classroom restrooms and a viewing room. The facility was designed to meet the American for Disabilities Act’s regulations, and includes a non-ambulatory mounting ramp making all equine-related activities accessible for physically disabled participants. GHERF is the only Premier Accredited Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship (PATH) facility within the area. PATH’s Premier accreditation is an intensive program whereby centers must demonstrate excellence in providing quality, evidence based EAAs. Recognizing Good Hope’s superiority in administrative and service delivery methodologies, the agency has maintained its national accreditation status since November 2001.
