Direct Supervisor: Building Principal
Contracted Length Term: Librarian: 186 days
Salary: Librarian 186-day salary schedule: Range $49,903 - $78,108, based on education/experience.
Start Date  August TBD, 2025

Summary of Position:
The successful library candidate plays a vital role in promoting literacy, fostering a love of reading, and teaching culturally and linguistically diverse students to access library tools to support their reading goals within Montrose High School and throughout the school district. The successful candidate seeks out collaboration with teachers, library paraprofessionals throughout the district, and students of all educational abilities. The successful library candidate has a confident grasp of integrating technology and is not afraid to use learning management and digital tools such as Google Classroom, SORA, MackinVIA, Follett Destiny, and even the world of AI. They manage the library environment, facilitate and curate library resources, and support students and staff in the educational mission of the school. 
 
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Library Management

  • Organize and maintain the library collection, including books, periodicals, digital media, and other resources and equipment.
  • Implement and oversee cataloging, circulation, and inventory software systems for the district.
  • Create a welcoming and inclusive library environment for all students and staff.
  • Develop and enforce library policies and procedures.

Instructional Duties

  • Teach students and staff how to effectively locate, evaluate, and use information from diverse sources.
  • Provide instruction on research methods, digital literacy, and ethical use of information.
  • Design and deliver lessons or programs that align with curriculum standards and foster critical thinking.
  • Collaborate with teachers to integrate library resources into classroom activities and projects.

Literacy Promotion

  • Guide students in selecting appropriate reading materials for their academic levels and interests.
  • Foster a lifelong love of reading and learning by curating diverse and inclusive reading materials.
  • Promote reading with celebrations, author visits, and book clubs.

Technology Integration

  • Stay abreast of new educational technologies and incorporate them into library programs.
  • Assist students and staff in using digital tools, databases, and library management software.
  • Provide training or workshops on emerging technologies and digital literacy for students and staff.

Collaboration and Advocacy

  • Collaborate with teachers, administrators, and parents to advocate for the library's role in student learning.
  • Participate in school committees and initiatives related to curriculum development and student success.

Supervision and Mentorship

  • Supervise students during library visits to ensure a safe and respectful environment.
  • Provide guidance and mentorship to student library assistants, library clerks, and volunteers.

Certified Professional Leadership

  • Organize, develop, and deliver professional development to K-12 library paraprofessionals.
  • Oversee and assist with all district cataloging, as needed, for all sites; you are the primary certified librarian in the district.
  • Further develop, update, and ensure the implementation of the 5-year strategic library plan for MCSD.
  • Provide ongoing professional development for all library paraprofessionals based on the goals and objectives in the five-year plan.
  • Collaborate with the MCSD Finance Department and building supervisors on grants and budgets.
  • Oversee, plan and organize author visits, reading promotions, and celebrations.

Education/Certification:

  • Preferred: Master’s degree in Library Science, Education, or equivalent field.
  • Required: Hold a valid teaching certificate from the CO Department of Education
  • K-12 Librarian Endorsement (or eligible to obtain)
    • Completion of an approved program from a regionally accredited institution library science, media science or similar area, including supervised practicum or internship which includes both elementary and secondary school library experience.
    • PRAXIS 5312 may be required, per CDE endorsement requirements

Experience:

  • 3 years experience as a Librarian in a school setting is preferred.

Knowledge of and Abilities:
Knowledge of:

  • Passion for literature, education, and fostering student growth.

  • Form professional relationships with families of multilingual learners.
  • Utilize workplace technology to improve communication, collaboration, and productivity.
  • Ability to manage school based and district-based library budgets
  • Biliterate in English and Spanish preferred.

Physical Requirements:
The physical requirements indicated below are examples of the physical aspects that this position classification must perform in carrying out essential job functions.  

  • Persons performing service in this position classification will exert 5 to 40 pounds of force frequently to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects.
  • This type of work involves sitting, walking, and/or standing.
  • Exposure to hot, cold, wet, humid, or windy conditions caused by weather may occasionally be experienced.
  • Perceiving the nature of sound, near and far vision, depth perception, providing oral information, the manual dexterity to operate business related equipment, and handling and working with various materials and objects are important aspects of this job.
