Intern, Events and Engagement, Communications & Public Affairs, Illinois State Senate Republican Staff

Division Summary: As a division within the Senate Republican Caucus, Events and Engagement strengthens our members’ constituent relationships through memorable events, experiences and outreach efforts backed by strategic insight, creativity, and superior production. Our division seeks to offer a broader level of staff support in members’ districts by working with the senators individually to construct and implement personalized plans to enhance outreach, events, and messaging with constituents, boost lines of communication with various stakeholders, and assist with regional issues – working toward the ultimate goal of providing better, more comprehensive service to constituents.

Goals of Position:

• Gain a comprehensive understanding of the daily functions of the legislative branch in Illinois state government

• Learn to communicate and coordinate with others to complete complex assignments and successfully organize events

• Learn the functions and intersections of various aspects of state government branches, including legislative, departmental, and local governmental units

• Prepare to enter a professional work environment by gaining transferable skills that will facilitate the transition to private or public sector employment Duties and Responsibilities:

• Assigned to certain senators’ teams, handling events and meetings, with the oversight of a manager

• Participate in outreach and coalition development activities identified by Senate members • Conduct phone calls with various individuals daily

• Develop micro-targeting and detailed research to create large Microsoft Excel contact lists for solicitation to potential attendees to senators’ respective events

• Create specialized and personalized communication and correspondence activities based off large micro-targeted contact lists

• Boost attendee engagement with senators post-event • Produce detailed research related to members’ districts

• Attend relevant meetings and prepares detailed summaries of content Illinois State Senate Republican Staff Fall 2025 Internship Position Description Division of Events and Engagement Communications and Public Affairs

• Assist with cultivating partnerships that promote citizen assistance projects in Senate districts • Develops effective operating systems to assure coordination of special projects and long-term assignments

• Assists with transforming policy initiatives into viable programs to be used by senators in their districts

• Other duties as assigned Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Attributes:

• Must be in pursuit of a degree from an accredited college or university or a recent college graduate

• Coursework in marketing, communications, journalism, public affairs, or political science preferred, but not required

• Exceptional computer skills using Microsoft Office software, Microsoft Teams specifically, Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint, and Word

• Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written

• Resourceful, “can-do” attitude and keen attention to detail

• Works well with others as a team

• Research skills

• Impeccable time management and prioritization skills, with ability to multitask and focus on time-sensitive projects, and meet deadlines

• Strong interpersonal skills

• Eagerness to learn and willingness to ask questions

• Professional demeanor and a drive to succeed

• Strong organizational abilities Position Details:

This is a fall semester long paid internship.

• Must be able to work out of the Illinois State Capitol Complex in Springfield, IL

• Willingness to travel for events and meetings during the week and occasionally on weekends

• Open to both full and part-time interns (full-time interns are required to work 35 hours a week and part-time interns must be able to work at least 21 hours a week). Regular hours are Monday-Friday from 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.

• Weekly schedule can be flexible based on intern’s availability to work

• Compensation: Pay is based on past work experience and level of education completed

• Internship is open to both undergraduate students and college graduates.
