Development Intern

ABOUT OUR INTERNSHIPS AT UNITED WAY WORLDWIDE

UWW’s summer internship program is designed to expose students to the substantive work of the organization. Interns will be assigned to specific departments, gaining experience in both discrete project work and day-to-day operations. Our intern cohort will receive guidance and supervision from a departmental director and will have the opportunity to build professional connections with staff across the organization.

POSITION SUMMARY: The Development Intern will be a part of the Individual Giving team, whose objectives are to raise support for UWW and to enable United Ways across the network to more fully realize our shared mission and goals by leveraging support (resources, people, and info) both from United Way Worldwide (UWW) and from within the network itself.  This intern position will help the Individual Giving team to deliver on team goals. 

PRIMARY PROJECT(S): 

  • Assist the Individual Giving (Mid-level, Major, and Planned Giving) team with multiple projects related to expanding fundraising for UWW and in the United Way network
  • Data input and donor info uploads
  • Provide input to the creation of donor impact reports
  • Develop donor prospect profiles using multiple data sources
  • Update the Content Library/Resource library project to update the content listing, ensure consistency across the content, and ensure all relevant documents are on UW Online
  • Create digital files for the Tocqueville Society agreements from United Ways across the network
  • Attend virtual webinars on fundraising topics
  • Work with the Individual Giving team in the Alexandria office to support their development/fundraising initiatives.
  • Other duties and special projects as assigned.

REQUIRED SKILLS : 

  • Must have strong project management, technology, and communication skills along with being detail-oriented. 
  • Ability to multi-task.  Must be able to work both independently and as part of a team.  Must be flexible and comfortable in a fast-paced environment.  Selection will be based on project delivery experience, GPA/academic achievement, extracurricular/civic activities, and strong interest in a potential career in the nonprofit industry, especially in fundraising/development.
  • Strong working knowledge of all Microsoft Suite office products, specifically, Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Willingness to protect confidential donor information and to sign a non-disclosure agreement before the internship commences.

PROGRAM SPECIFICS

Eligibility:  Current undergraduate students

Internship Period:  June 2 – July 31, 2025

Schedule:  Mondays – Thursdays, 9:00 am – 4:30 pm (Hybrid: on-site 3 days/week)

Location:  This internship takes place at the United Way Worldwide office at 701 N. Fairfax St., Alexandria, VA 22314.

Pay Rate:  $21.00 / hour

Applicants must be eligible to work within the United States and have all documentation at the time of their application, including a Social Security Number. Hybrid internship schedules will generally be Monday through Thursday, 9:00 am - 4:30 pm, though workdays may vary, depending on activities, events, and assignments.
