Number of Vacancies- Two (2)
Appointment Length- 3 months – March 24, 2025 – June 26, 2025
WDFW Program- Communications and Public Engagement (CAPE) Program – Director’s Office
Duty Station- Olympia, Washington – Thurston County
Hybrid/Telework- While this position offers a hybrid work arrangement, the successful candidate must be available to report to the Olympia, WA headquarters as needed. The selected candidate may be able to telework/work remotely up to 1-2 days per week at the discretion of the supervisor.

These internships provide unique opportunities to support WDFW in engaging communities through recreation and stewardship. 

As an intern, you'll gain hands-on experience in both formal and informal conservation education strategies, collaborating with WDFW staff on statewide programming that promotes fish and wildlife education. 

Through mentorship and diverse projects, you’ll help refine resources that bring meaningful educational opportunities to Washingtonians while learning about community outreach, volunteer programming, and the vital role conservation plays in our communities.
 

What to Expect-
Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Environmental Education and Community Outreach Interns will,

Support Wild Washington K-12 Education:

  • Review rentable educational resources and assist with developing activities that pair with biofacts.
  • Aid staff in updating PowerPoints and lesson activities for various requests.
  • Explore existing resources and collaborate with conservation education staff to improve their utilization.
  • Assist with preparation for outdoor school, including resource development, material organization, and other tasks.
  • Identify opportunities to make fish and wildlife topics more relevant to youth, families, and young adults.

Support Informal Education:

  • Assist with updating the Habitat at Home toolkit, coordinating the Western Washington Native Plant Sales, and leading community workshops.
  • Support community events such as the City Nature Challenge, help develop educational content for herpetofauna habitat and create engaging social media content.
  • Learn and assist with materials organization and program marketing efforts.

Support WDFW Volunteer Program:

  • Shadow the volunteer coordinator to learn recruitment, training, and planning for volunteer projects at WDFW wildlife areas.
  • Help coordinate volunteer appreciation events and inventory volunteer materials.

Support Community Partnerships and Outreach:

  • Assist with community event tabling, update outreach materials, and support the implementation of Outreach Tracking software.
  • Create promotional flyers using Adobe software and help assess current printed materials for the publications database.

 

WORKING CONDITIONS: 

Work Setting, including hazards: 

  • Primarily performed in an office setting and some outdoor activities, including exposure to inclement weather.
  • Fast-paced and deadline-driven environment.
  • Often lift and transport items over 25 pounds, with or without assistance.
  • Duties involve navigating uneven terrain while setting up and breaking down tables and tents for outreach events.

Schedule: 

  • Typically, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm. Some weekend and evening work is required.
  • Telework options may be available - minimum of 20% in-person work is required.

Travel Requirements: 
Occasional travel for day trips may be required.

Tools and Equipment: 
Laptop, printer, scanner, copier, and state vehicle.

Customer Interactions: 
Engage with the public during education and outreach events, as well as supporting staff at community workshops. Communicate with the public via email or phone as needed.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

Required Qualifications: 

Any of the following are encouraged to apply:

  • Those that have at least three (3) months of experience (volunteer, professional, or educational) in conservation education, outreach, or community engagement and volunteer programming.
  • Are currently undergoing/pursuing a degree at an accredited college or university in a related field of study.
  • Have recently (within the last six (6) months) completed a degree at an accredited college or university in a related field of study.
  • Are military officers or enlisted personnel interested in pursuing a civilian career in conservation education, outreach, or community engagement and volunteer programing or a related field.

Competencies:

  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, Access, and Outlook.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to engage patiently with volunteers and the public.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and collaboratively as part of a team.

Certifications/Licenses:
Valid driver’s license.

 

Preferred Qualifications:
In addition to the required qualifications, our ideal applicant will possess some or all the following:

  • Interest in, and passion for connecting people with the outdoors.
  • Prior experience in education, outreach, or volunteer work related to conservation.
  • Familiarity with wildlife conservation and sustainable resource management.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively in a team.
  • Willingness to work outdoors in various weather conditions.
  • Proficiency in a second language.
