C.O. Miniger Education Fellowship Job Description
Status: 8-month term, full-time, non-exempt
Salary: $22,000 paid in bi-weekly installments

In support of the long-anticipated Second Wave Expansion opening, The National Museum of the Great Lakes seeks a Fellow to support educational programming in the new temporary exhibits and Great Lakes Community Education Center. This individual will also provide added support to our growing educational programming needs. This is a postgraduate fellowship with an 8-month term (May-December 2025). The ideal candidate will be a recent graduate with a degree in public history, museum studies, education, or a related field, strong organizational skills, excellent oral and written communication skills, and an interest in the Great Lakes.
Position Purpose / Summary:
The C.O. Miniger Education Fellow will support the educational programming in the new temporary exhibits and Great Lakes Community Education Center as part of our Second Wave Expansion. The role also provides added support to growing educational programming needs.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
TEMPORARY EXHIBITS:

Develop and implement educational programming to support the new temporary exhibits: Dark Waters: True Crime & Mystery on the Great Lakes; and Frozen in Time: A Wooden & Antique Boat Collection
ACTIVATE GREAT LAKES COMMUNITY EDUCATION CENTER:
- Provide Capt. Scupper’s Summer Kids Club program and support to engage youth in maritime history education. (Includes weekend support during the summer season.)
- Lead Victory Cruise Lines exclusive shore excursions. It requires work outside regular hours to support cruise passenger experiences for 34 shore excursions and planned round trips from Detroit to the National Museum of the Great Lakes. Travel to Detroit, Michigan, is required.
- Works as part of the Education Team to help facilitate other educational programs, including leading guided tours of the museum exhibits and historic lake freighter and tugboat, with customized tours for different audiences.
Working Hours and Environment:
- This is a full-time, 8-month term, salaried position, working 40 hours per week. The schedule must flex to meet the needs of programs and events, including early morning, evening, and weekend hours.
- Requires the ability to climb stairs and lead groups through our historic lake freighter and tugboat, working outdoors, even in inclement weather.
