The Center for English Language Programs (CELP) is a unit of Global Education at Minnesota State University, Mankato (MSU). The CELP includes the Intensive English Program (IEP) which offers students English language training that prepares them to pursue academic studies in a U.S. university. Students receive 20 hours of English-based courses per week. In addition to taking language courses, IEP students meet with an MSU student, a Language Partner from the Honors Program or from other departments, for two hours each week outside of class for conversation practice on cross-cultural topics. Language partners help IEP students to practice strategies for understanding lectures, reading academic texts, planning essays, reviewing assignments, and preparing for the TOEFL test. Upon completion of the IEP and after satisfying the University’s language proficiency requirements, an IEP student may enroll as a degree-seeking student. In addition to the IEP program, the CELP also offers short-term language programs based on the specific needs of sponsoring agencies and various institutional partners. At present, the CELP serves approximately 90-100 students per year. For further information, visit the CELP website.

The CELP is dedicated to enriching and enhancing the diversity of our academic community, including race, ethnicity and national origins, gender and gender identity, sexual orientation, age, ability, veteran status, class, and religion. We are especially committed to increasing the representation of those populations that have been historically excluded from participation in U.S. higher education. In CELP and IEP classrooms, offices, and in the content of our courses, members and staff are dedicated to cultivating an environment that is diverse, equitable, and inclusive.
