Greenway Restoration Ecology Intern 1 or 2

General Description

 

This is a summer internship responsible for restoration field work on Engineering Division controlled ponds and greenways. This work also includes landscaping on city medians. The Greenway Restoration Ecology intern will help with the installation of desirable vegetation, the control of invasive species, the inventory of plant and animal species and other work related to the ecological health of the City’s stormwater management system and median planting program. Approximately 70% of internship is to be spent on greenway and pond work and 30% of time is to be spent on median planting program.


Compensation:
Level 1: $20.28/hr
Level 2: $22.34/hr

 

Hours: Hours for this position will average 40 hours per week working four, 10-hour days Monday-Thursday. Approximate start date is Monday, May 12 and approximate end date is November 13, but exact start and end dates may vary based on availability of hired candidates. For example, flexibility may be offered for those working around a school calendar. End date has been set based on full crew working 40 hours a week and may vary depending on hours left available.


APPLICATIONS WILL BE ACCEPTED UNTIL THE CLOSING DATE. HOWEVER, THE SELECTION PROCESS WILL BEGIN PRIOR TO THE CLOSING DATE BASED UPON THE NEEDS OF THE ENGINEERING DIVISION.

 

Examples of Duties and Responsibilities

 

  • Remove invasive plants by manual, mechanical means including digging, hand pulling, power brush cutting, and others.
  • Identify and inventory common plant and animal species, especially highly problematic invasive species such as garlic mustard, wild parsnip, crown vetch, bird’s foot trefoil, sweet clover, reed canary grass, burdock, Japanese knotweed, Japanese hedge parsley, purple loosestrife, invasive thistles, common reed grass and others.
  • Plant and care for desirable plants including plugs, seedlings or seeds.
  • Collect native seeds for use on greenways and ponds under guidance of Greenway Vegetation Coordinator.
  • Make informed decisions about restoration approaches on ponds and greenways under the guidance of Greenway Vegetation Coordinator.
  • Survey City rain gardens for invasive species, safety/vision hazards, aesthetics and plant health.  Remove undesirable vegetation as necessary.
  • Survey medians for invasive species, safety/vision hazards, aesthetics and plant health.  Remove undesirable vegetation as necessary.
  • Work with and provide guidance to Operation Fresh Start (OFS) youth crew members under supervision of OFS crew leader and/or Greenway Vegetation Coordinator.
  • Provide guidance to volunteers in the field.
  • Field and/or direct inquiries about restoration work from residents in the field.

 

Minimum Qualifications

Level 1:
 

  • Currently enrolled in a bachelor’s degree or higher program in Restoration Ecology, Landscape Architecture, Conservation, Forestry, Wildlife Ecology, Horticulture, Environmental Studies, Biology or related field.

OR
 

  • Three or more months experience working in the field in a restoration ecology related position including working with native plants, invasive plants and using a variety of restoration techniques.


Level 2:
 

  • Currently enrolled in a bachelor’s degree or higher program in Restoration Ecology, Landscape Architecture, Conservation, Forestry, Wildlife Ecology, Horticulture, Environmental Studies, Biology or related field; AND
  • Three or more months experience working in the field in a restoration ecology related position including working with native plants, invasive plants and using a variety of restoration techniques; and
  • Wisconsin Commercial Applicator’s License – 6.0 Right-of-Way and Natural Areas.

 

Special Requirements

 

  • Possession of a valid driver's license

Possession of a Wisconsin Commercial Pesticide Applicator’s License in Right-of-Way/Natural Areas no later than May 12, 2025.

 

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to lift up to 25 pounds frequently and 50 pounds occasionally.
  • Must be able to walk on uneven terrain.
  • Must be able to perform sustained physical activity under a variety of conditions including heat, humidity, sun, rain, etc.
  • Must be able to stoop, bend and crouch.
  • Must be able to withstand working around a variety of plants for sustained periods of time.

*The payroll title for this position is Conservation Ranger 1 (Hourly) or Conservation Ranger 2 (Hourly).
