Part-time, paid internship at $15/hour for 15-20 hours/week

Apple MacBook laptop provided

Primarily remote work but willing to come to the Lindquist Center for interviews, taking photos and video or helping with special events

Seeking a multimedia content creator with excellent writing and copyediting skills who is looking for an opportunity to gain valuable, real-world experience in strategic communications and marketing. 

Join a dynamic and creative Strategic Communications Office team where you will strengthen photography, digital and print design, social media, and writing skills in a variety of genres – honing the ability to tell compelling stories across multiple channels – from creating recruitment marketing content for the web to writing feature stories or other public relations content. You will also have the chance to learn from leaders in the field and participate in big picture planning and strategic discussions.

We’re especially looking for some who can take photos and work with our social media platforms.

Basic Function and Responsibility

Advance the University of Iowa College of Education’s visibility and reputation through written communications, photography, social media, and events. Duties will include creating content for the web, writing articles and copy for other materials, taking photographs of individuals, groups, and at events, basic web editing in Drupal, scheduling content for social media, as well as helping to organize virtual and in-person events for college alumni and other constituents as a part of the college’s strategic communications team.

The intern’s work may appear in the college’s print publications and online via the college’s news section, annual report, alumni magazine, social media, and other communication channels to reach our internal and external audiences. The intern may assist with other communications activities as assigned.

Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities

  • Schedule interviews and photos with faculty, staff, students, and alumni to create original content. It is required that the intern is willing to be on campus and come to the College of Education to take event or other photos.
  • Conduct interviews with sources and create articles that adhere to college and university style guidelines. Strong writing skills are required, and knowledge of Associated Press and University editorial style is a plus.
  • Enter articles and photos into the college’s website using Drupal (training provided)
  • Share social media content in an appropriate tone and manner.
  • Participate in planning for virtual or in-person events such as our Homecoming celebration and UI Iowa State Fair exhibit, help plan alumni and friends reunions or events and conduct social media campaigns around these events.
  • Maintain effective working relationships with college faculty, staff, students, external constituents, and the public.
  • Demonstrate respect for all members of the university community in the course of performing one’s duties and in response to administrators, supervisors, coworkers, and customers; constructively bring forward workplace concerns to coworkers and/or supervisor.
  • Assist in other communications activities as needed.

Required Qualifications

Currently enrolled University of Iowa student (junior or senior undergraduate or graduate) with a minimum 3.0 GPA.

Reasonable knowledge of the principles, practices, and techniques of strategic communications.

Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Fast learner with strong critical-thinking skills.
  • Proven strong writing skills
  • Photography and photo editing experience
  • Knowledge of Canva or Adobe Spark for creating social media graphics
  • Detail-oriented, technology-savvy team player.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communications, and management skills.
  • Ability to perform multiple tasks and manage several projects simultaneously.
  • Ability to positively interact with diverse populations while representing the College of Education to internal and external constituents.
  • Some knowledge of and/or an interest to learn about the University of Iowa College of Education.

Desired

  • Strong interest in and some experience in using social media strategically for an organization, business, or non-profit

Supervision Received

 Supervision is received from the College of Education’ strategic communications director and/or other designated staff.

  • Intern will either work remotely and/or in a Lindquist Center office with remote work on a College of Education-provided laptop. 
  • Participation in Zoom staff meetings is required.
