The Georgia Department of Public Health is seeking a highly qualified candidate for the position of Associate Manager (Virology) with in the Division of Health Protection, Public Health Laboratory located in Decatur, GA.
The Division of Microbiology at the Georgia Public Health Laboratory (GPHL) is responsible for detecting, identifying, and reporting communicable diseases in the State of Georgia. The Division is responsible for maintaining expertise and capability in a wide variety of public health microbiology specialties including Virology. The Virology unit provides a wide range of testing including Rabies, HIV sequencing, and respiratory surveillance.
As the supervisor of this unit, the incumbent will be responsible for the oversight of direct reports and managing day-to-day operational activities that include all aspects of specimen receipt, processing, and testing.
The incumbent will be responsible for ensuring the completeness, accuracy, and timeliness of reporting and for approving results. This person also will ensure that there is adequate inventory to perform all tests and will work with the Deputy Director to ensure the most current test methods and instrumentation are being used.
This mid-level manager position reports directly to the Deputy Director of Virology and Immunology. The candidate will collaborate with internal and external partners including laboratory colleagues in various departments, the quality assurance team, epidemiologists, medical professionals in the State Acute Disease Epidemiology, local clinical labs, and professionals at the CDC.
To be considered for this position, the individual must meet the qualifications of a general supervisor for the specialty microbiology, and subspeciality mycobacteriology under CLIA.
Job Responsibilities
Administrative
- Create work and lab rotation schedules, approve leave, and hire staff.
- Conduct performance evaluations.
- Make decisions regarding promotions and disciplinary actions in consultation with the Deputy Director.
- Provide workforce/professional development opportunities for the staff.
- Provide coaching and mentoring, staff recognition, and cross-training opportunities.
- Ensure that competency assessments, proficiency testing, and preventive maintenance paperwork are updated and organized.
- Communicate with the Deputy Director regularly as lab needs arise.
Laboratory Operations
- Oversees all daily operations of the Virology unit.
- Oversees laboratory supply and stock reagent inventory and ordering.
- Oversees the quality control and quality assurance activities for the unit.
- Ensure adherence to biosafety protocols.
- Assists with grants and contracts as assigned by the Department Deputy Director.
Minimum Qualifications
Associate degree in a related science area from an accredited college or university, certification as a Medical Technologist, MT (ASCP), and four (4) years of job-related science experience
OR
Two (2) years of experience at the lower level Medical/Clinical Specialist 3 (LSP012) or equivalent position.
Preferred Qualifications
In addition to the minimum qualification’s preference will be given to applicants who possess the following:
- Must meet Federal CLIA ’88 personnel requirements for General Supervisor in a high-complexity laboratory. https://www.ecfr.gov/current/title-42/section-493.1461
- Experience working in a BSL3 laboratory.
- Understanding of molecular biology techniques such as PCR.
- Knowledge of CLIA regulations.
- Demonstrated success supervising a work unit in a public health laboratory or regulated microbiology/molecular diagnostic laboratory.
- Effective organizational and time management skills.
- Ability to think critically and strategically.
- A collaborative team player with an open mindset who exhibits emotional intelligence.
- The ability to effectively, communicate verbally and in writing with federal, state, and regional partners.
