General Description of Position:
Provides research, design, calculation, project coordination and CAD support to Project Manager, Project Engineer and Project Surveyor. Assignments generally may include, but are not limited to, the preparation of design calculations, cost estimates, quantity calculations, CAD drawings, specifications, maps, plats, exhibits, descriptions, local agency application packages, letters, project memoranda and reports under the direct supervision of a Project Manager, Project Engineer or Project Surveyor. Position requires good verbal and written communication skills. Position requires contact with firm’s clients and local public agency personnel.
The position of Junior Civil Engineer is an exempt position.
Responsibilities:
The following are the typical, but not all inclusive, responsibilities of the Junior Civil Engineer position at KSN.
Junior Civil Engineer is responsible for performing routine engineering design and surveying assignments, as may be periodically assigned by a Project Manager, Project Engineer or Project Surveyor.
Junior Civil Engineer must have competent, working knowledge in the areas of site improvement plans and specifications, public works improvement plans and specifications, opinions of probable costs, grading balance calculations, quantity calculations, hydraulic calculations, regulatory permitting processes, utility research, public contract requirements, basis of survey control, and Federal, State and local agency design and mapping standards. Junior Civil Engineer will work under the direction of a Project Manager, Project Surveyor or Project Engineer and will be responsible for the preparation and formatting of improvement plans, profiles, cross-sections and details for a broad range of project types including but limited to flood control, site improvement, grading, drainage, street improvements, water supply, treatment, and distribution, wastewater collection and treatment, storm drainage collection, pump stations, etc.. Junior Civil Engineer may periodically be required to supervise and review the work of administrative, survey and technical support staff.
Junior Civil Engineer must have good verbal and written communication skills, and the ability to effectively communicate with staff, the public and clients on matters of a technical nature. Junior Civil Engineer must have good organizational skills and be capable of methodically and logically carrying out project assignments. Junior Civil Engineer is responsible for clearly and legibly documenting research, calculations, communications, reports, estimates and other matters related to project assignments.
Junior Civil Engineer is responsible for understanding and implementing KSN’s standards and procedures, including but not limited to CAD standards, file naming standards, and plan/map format standards.
Junior Civil Engineer must have a good working knowledge of the following software: Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Outlook, Microsoft Project, AutoCad 3D, and hydraulic design software.
Junior Civil Engineer is responsible for having a general understanding of the project budget, general scope and delivery schedule for all assignments. Junior Civil Engineer must have the ability to prepare realistic estimates of the amount of staff time required to complete a task, assignment, or project. Junior Civil Engineer is responsible for making every reasonable effort to meet or exceed KSN’s obligations and commitments to its clients in these areas.
Junior Civil Engineer will periodically assist KSN’s Principals, Project Managers, Project Surveyors and Project Engineers in the preparation of project proposals including the preparation scope, schedule and budget. Junior Civil Engineer may periodically be assigned smaller projects for which the Junior Civil Engineer will be responsible for monitoring project scope, schedule and budget. Junior Civil Engineer’s duties and responsibilities may include other assignments and tasks not specifically stated above.
The direct labor utilization rate for the Junior Civil Engineer position is expected to be a minimum of 85%.
Education:
Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering, or equivalent.
Experience:
Preferred: Two years of relevant and increasingly responsible design engineering related experience.
Licensing:
Engineer in Training Certificate
