Graduate Student Assistant
The Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment (OEHHA) is part of the California Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). OEHHA is the primary state entity for the assessment of risks posed by chemical contaminants in the environment. Our mission is to protect and enhance the health of Californians and our state's environment through scientific evaluations that inform, support and guide regulatory and other actions.
OEHHA is seeking a graduate level student to fill a student intern position to assist in a pesticide epidemiology study, which investigates the relationship between human health outcomes in California communities and surrounding soil fumigant uses. This position is in the Pesticide Exposure Evaluation and Medical Education Section, which is a multi-disciplinary team that addresses the prevention, surveillance, regulation, and evaluation of pesticide-related public health issues of agricultural workers and communities exposed to pesticides. The ideal candidate has experience and strong interest in data processing, statistical programming, and scientific research.
Duties of the intern position may include:
- Selection of California communities for the pesticide epidemiology study.
a. Query and aggregate statewide Pesticide Use Report (PUR) data for multiple soil fumigants with different spatial resolution.
b. Research and map PUR data, census data, air pollutant data, and other related datasets and perform spatial data analysis.
c. Develop ranking approach for community selection. - Summarize health outcome data in the selected communities.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Knowledge of data science tools and experience in data processing and statistical programming, preferably R software.
- Experience in spatial data analysis using R, ArcGIS, QGIS, and/or other software.
- Coursework and/or research experience in public health, environmental health, and/or environmental science; knowledge of study methods in environmental epidemiology.
- Self-motivated and ability to work independently and as a team member.
- Must be an enrolled graduate student and residing in California.
OEHHA offers a hybrid work environment with telework opportunities within California as well as the potential for students to work out of OEHHA’s Oakland or Sacramento office. This position is a paid position. Compensation is based on student's enrollment status and units completed.
