Summer Instructor - Summer 2025

We are seeking qualified and enthusiastic applicants for one Summer position (linked with Job Descriptions):
Ultimately, the position is aimed at creating and teaching an engaging Mathematics course for rising 10th, 11th and 12th grade students in the Upward Bound summer program. Each course meets three hours per week in a Mon/Wed format to simulate the structure of a college course (180 instructional minutes per week).
QUALIFICATIONS
Required:
- Bachelor’s degree
- Ability to employ a variety of teaching strategies, including cooperative learning
- Ability to teach the reasoning process involved the study of your selected subject
- Ability to handle multiple assignments, conflicting demands and priorities
Desired:
The following highly desirable qualifications are NOT NECESSARY to be successful in this role or with our students. These qualifications are based on student needs and recommendations from both student participants and professional staff members in the program.
- Current certification to teach math at the secondary level
- Experience teaching math to high school students
- Experience incorporating computer technology into teaching and learning
- Experience working with students from low-income backgrounds, multiethnic backgrounds, and/or who are potential first-generation college graduates
SUPERVISION RECEIVED:
Summer instructors receive functional supervision from the Upward Bound Educational Specialists. The Upward Bound Project Director maintains administrative supervision over all summer program staff.
NON-NEGOTIABLE TRAINING/SPECIAL EVENT/DUE DATES:
Attendance at the training/special event dates listed below is required.
May 16th: Final Curriculum and Supply List Due Via Email
May 30th: Instructional Staff Orientation
June 12th: All Staff Training
June 14th: Summer Program Kickoff Picnic
June 16th - July 17th: Classroom Teaching
July 17th: Closing Ceremony
REQUIRED COMPLIANCES:
All candidates who are hired for the instructor position will be required to complete University of Iowa training and compliances to comply with University Policy concerning Minors or Youth on Campus. Those hired will complete a Minors on Campus Module, Harassment Prevention, and First-Aid/CPR. All final candidates will complete a Criminal Background Check with assistance from the University of Iowa Human Resources.
