Urban Forestry Intern

About the Position:
The City of Grand Junction’s Parks and Recreation program is seeking an Urban Forestry Intern wanting to gain experience in urban forestry with a focus on building and updating the City’s public tree inventory database. Desired position will work 20-40 hours per week during the school semester, and 40 hours a week while the university is out of session for the summer.
 
This paid internship opportunity may be completed for an academic credit internship if approved by your institution or may be worked as a part-time job if you choose.

About the Grand Junction Parks & Rec Department:
The Department is under the larger City of Grand Junction umbrella, which is a home-rule municipality. Duties include overseeing, coordinating, and providing recreation programs and services of the City including adult and youth sports, aquatics, recreational activities, youth camps, fifty-plus programs, fitness and wellness programs, outdoor and environmental programs, programs during out-of-school time, early childhood programs, special events, and clinics.

What You'll Do:

  • Collect field data using data entry and database entry for public trees within parks.
  • Information collected will include tree location, species, size, condition, and other various attributes.
  • Assess the health of ash trees and complete tree trunk injections to control pests.
  • Opportunity to be involved in other urban forestry work duties including tree planting, tree pruning, and stump grinding. 

 

What We're Looking For: 

  • Candidate must have the ability to work independently and learn new computer software.  
  • Applicants must be able to successfully pass a drug screen, background check, and, if required for the specific position, a physical examination. 
  • Ability to identify common tree species is preferred.
  • Must be a current student at Colorado Mesa University enrolled in an Environmental Science, Biological Science, Watershed Science, or Geographic Information Science program; OR a CMU Tech student, enrolled in an associate degree or certificate program for Agriculture Science or Sustainable Agriculture, Natural Resource Management, Environmental Science, or other related fields is preferred.

 

Physical Conditions

Primary functions may require maintaining physical condition necessary for bending, stooping, kneeling, standing or walking for prolonged periods of time; lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, and moving heavy furniture and equipment.
