Norwalk Recreation & Parks Environmental Science and Forestry Internship (Paid)

Salary: $19 - $21.00 per hour (depending on experience)

Job Type: Part-Time, up to 18 hours per week

Location: Norwalk, CT

Schedule: The schedule for this position is flexible and will be determined based on the applicant’s availability. Working hours are generally between 7:30 AM and 4:30 PM, with the possibility of occasional weekend work.

Work Location: Throughout the City of Norwalk with primary work location at the Recreation & Parks office at City Hall: 125 East Ave, Norwalk CT

Job Summary: The Environmental Science and Forestry Internship with the City of Norwalk’s Department of Recreation and Parks provides a dynamic opportunity to gain practical experience in the fields of Urban Forestry and Environmental Science. Interns will engage in a variety of tasks, including but not limited to collecting and analyzing environmental data, assessing tree health and site conditions, and supporting the City’s Tree Planting Program. In addition to fieldwork, interns will assist with a variety of office-based tasks, including data management, maintenance of records, and the creation of materials for public engagement and outreach. This description is not all inclusive and may include other tasks as assigned by the Arborist/Horticulturist

Through this internship, interns will develop a comprehensive understanding of urban forestry and green infrastructure, data-management, and community engagement in the environmental field.

Key Responsibilities: 

  • Perform fieldwork activities such as collecting data using GIS and inventory software, evaluating the condition of newly planted trees and shrubs, and assessing sites for future green infrastructure projects.
  • Review, analyze, and quality-check survey data to ensure accuracy, consistency, and completeness.
  • Respond to public tree requests and coordinate with residents to identify suitable locations and tree species for planting.
  • Maintain organized records, develop educational materials, and create presentations to support public outreach and environmental education programs.
  • Attend trainings to build technical expertise and skills in forestry, environmental science, and urban ecosystem management.


Supervised By: City Arborist/Horticulturist

Required Knowledge, Skills & Ability - Minimum Qualifications

  • One or more years of undergraduate coursework in Environmental Science, Ecology, or a closely related field.
  • Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions and terrain.
  • Experience working with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint); familiarity with GIS software is a plus.
  • Must hold a valid motor vehicle operator’s license in good standing to drive municipal-owned vehicles.
  • Must pass criminal background check.
