The Village of Wilmette is seeking self-motivated individuals with a strong work ethic to fill the Civil Engineering Intern positions in the Engineering and Public Works Department. This position will work 40 hours per week, generally between 7:30 AM to 4:30 PM, Monday through Friday, during the summer months with the option for additional winter (break time) work. The duration of the internship shall correspond with college summer break (start and end dates are flexible).

Wilmette is a beautiful, historic community located 16 miles north of downtown Chicago with convenient access to the Metra train station (Union Pacific North Line) which is steps away from Village Hall, as well as the CTA Purple Line. The community has approximately 28,000 residents and total area of 5.4 square miles.

 

General Responsibilities

The Civil Engineering Intern will work under the general direction of an Assistant Village Engineer and will assist in performing a wide variety of civil and municipal engineering related functions, including evaluating pavement conditions, construction inspections, resident communication, drainage utility investigation, contractor coordination, traffic studies, working with AutoCAD, clerical work, and any other related tasks.

 

Position Requirements

The successful candidate must be enrolled in a Civil Engineering or a related program and have an interest in pursuing a career in civil engineering. The candidate must have a valid driver’s license, the ability to work in a fast-paced environment and strong customer service skills. Working knowledge of Microsoft Office, AutoCAD and ArcGIS software is preferred. The position requires working outdoors, sometimes in adverse weather conditions, and extensive walking. On rare occasions, the candidate may be asked to use their own vehicle within the Village for job-related needs; the Village will reimburse the candidate using the 2025 IRS standard mileage rate. The candidate must also be able to furnish their own mobile phone and safety boots for use during work hours. No additional compensation will be provided for mobile phone use or safety boots.

 

Hourly Wage

The 2025 starting hourly rate is $19.61 to include eight (8) hours of paid time off (PTO). After the initial 320 hours of time worked; an additional hour of PTO will be earned for every additional 40 hours worked. Selection Process

The hiring process will entail an interview with members of the Engineering Division. A candidate who receives a conditional offer of employment will need to successfully complete a pre-employment physical examination to include a drug and alcohol screening, reference checks, and a driver’s license record verification.
