Community Trail Work Internship

Paid Summer Internship:  Assist Bethel Community Schools with final implementation steps of the Bethel Vermont Outdoor Recreation Economic Collaborative (VOREC) grant.  Primary focus will be on Bethel School Forest and Bethel Woods/Athletic Fields Multi Use Trail System tasks, including:  

  • Assisting the school land manager with basic trail maintenance tasks.
  • Updating school forest boundary paint blaze updates.
  • Constructing short trail reroutes and a short campus return loop.
  • Posting of accessible trail blazes and signage,.
  • Assistance with inventory and organization of the Bethel Placemaking Trailer contents.                                                 

This is primarily an outdoor job.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                   The school land manager, The Land Artist, LLC, will provide direction and hands on assistance on all work projects.  

  • Applicant should be able to work independently at times, but the land manager will be regularly available to answer questions.  
  • Applicant should be able to perform physical labor involving the use of hand tools to create short new sections of trail and may be assisted at times by Ridgeline Outdoor Collective volunteers.  
  • Applicant will likely interface on a regular basis with a wide variety of trail users, including mountain bikers, runners and hikers.  
  • A willingness and potential to learn basic trail building and land management skills in the primary requirement.  Previous experience performing such work could be beneficial, but is not an absolute requirement.  

Applicant may also assist in setting up placemaking trailer and event amenities for outdoor community events in and around the Bethel School Campus.   

20 hours per week from June 7 through August 15, 2025.  FREE HOUSING will be provided at the Vermont State University Campus in nearby Randolph, VT.  This position is part of a cohort of 12 interns working with organizations to support the White River Valley Community Schools.  Funded by the UVM Leahy Institute for Rural Partnerships, FREE HOUSING will be provided at Vermont Technical College in Randolph, VT.  Interns will participate in a week long community orientation, weekly intern cohort workshops for professional development, networking, and reflection and a final sharing event on Monday, August 4, 5:30 pm - 7 pm.  Questions about the cohort?  Contact UVM Internship Coordinator kristen.andrews@uvm.edu.
