About Joy Education Foundation

About Us: Joy Education Foundation is a technology-nonprofit that provides virtual support for reading to K-12 students and provides on-demand training for teachers, parents and other community volunteers to address literacy needs in their community.

Our Mission: Joy Education helps students, families, and communities become great readers and writers while finding the joy in it. We do that by offering a low-cost virtual reading clinic for students in grades 1-12 to help them overcome reading difficulties.

Our Vision: Because of our work, we will see every student, every family, and every community reading.

What we offer: Virtual learning support for students in grades 1-12 in the areas of reading. Students meet with Teaching Fellow-Reading Coaches (tutors) for 1-2 virtual 30 min tutoring sessions weekly where they work on reading goals like fluency and word recognition.

Our Approach

  • Instead of solving for all literacy needs, we focus on building student self-efficacy (academic self-esteem) because according to research, self-efficacy is one of the top influencers on student achievement. Our theory of action is that supporting student efficacy can lead to meaningful progress in literacy performance over time.
  • We take a social emotional learning (SEL) approach to support student literacy needs that includes: relationship building, a focus on growth mindset, meaningful goal setting, and relevant learning strategies.
  • We work directly with community organizations like schools and youth-serving organizations and parents to identify students  who would benefit from extra literacy support. We especially want to support students who receive Tier 2 and Tier 3 support in school, whether or not they are already receiving intervention support or specialized instruction.
