Summer Camp Behavior Advisor

Behavior Advisor Job Description

This position is responsible for providing support, intervention, and management of participant behaviors at day camp.  The Behavior Advisor is responsible for working with staff to coach and model positive behavior interventions and de-escalation techniques for participants experiencing a crisis situation or maladaptive behavior. The Behavior Advisor responds to calls for assistance from staff, is familiar with the behavior needs of participants, and develops proactive strategies for participants to successfully regulate their sensory and behavioral needs while at camp.

Essential Functions & Specific Responsibilities:

  • Act as the primary responder to all behavioral escalations and crisis situations for participants
    1. Respond to staff calls for support or assistance in dealing with behavior situations
    2. Utilize evidence-based, positive behavior supports and techniques to effectively deescalate crisis situations
    3. Direct staff and volunteers in how to appropriately respond to a behavior while maintaining safety and supervision of the rest of the group participants.
    4. Be a role model for staff on how Stepping Stones staff appropriately handles behavior or crisis situations.
    5. Abide by any best practice or behavior support plan when intervening in a behavioral support situation and comply with all Emergency Procedure protocols. 
  • Assist in the coaching and development of staff behavior management competencies.
    1. Collaborate with Advisors and Program Manager to provide feedback and guidance to staff on how to manage camper behaviors throughout the program day, including at times of transition, peer-to-peer conflict, defiance towards staff, sensory overstimulation, and other situations that may not rise to the level of crisis.
    2. Communicate with parents, when requested by the Program Manager, regarding behavioral concerns, ask for input regarding effective intervention strategies at school or home, and seek to identify behavior supports staff can implement at camp. 
    3. Provide guidance to staff on an ongoing basis regarding appropriate intervention strategies for specific campers as well as general best practices for all participants.
  • Be a productive liaison between unit staff and Program Manager.
    1. Communicate daily with Manager to discuss any challenges, ideas, or concerns.
    2. Assist in planning and leading staff meetings. 
    3. Work with the Activity Advisor and Program Manager to develop PECS, visual schedules, and other materials that help minimize behavioral issues and satisfy support needs.
    4. Assist in Driveway/Check-In and Check-Out as instructed by the Manager while ensuring a positive relationship with caregivers and being a professional representation of the agency. 
    5. Fulfill assigned role(s) during all emergency procedures as instructed by the Program Manager.
  • Coordinate and comply with standards and regulations, as well as adhering to external and internal documentation requirements.
    1. Comply with the standards of paperwork and documentation.
    2. Review individual service plans and behavior plans of participants and familiarize self and staff with identified support strategies.
    3. Maintain a high degree of professionalism with co-workers, volunteers, participants, guardians and visitors. 
  • Other assigned duties as required.
