Climate and Health Intern
Position description
The Saint Paul-Ramsey County Public Health Department seeks an intern to contribute to planning and engagement initiatives with the Climate and Health team. The Climate and Health Team works to address climate-related impacts on the health, safety, and well-being of underrecognized and climate-vulnerable communities by:
• Building relationships with climate-vulnerable and underrecognized community members to share impactful resources and inform the direction of our work,
• Collaborating with county leaders and partners to plan for and build capacity to reduce
anticipated health impacts of climate change,
• Managing and supporting projects that address the health impacts of climate change.
Specific projects may include:
• Helping to facilitate an extreme heat tabletop exercise.
• Contributing to heat mitigation planning.
• Assisting with Climate Action Planning for cities in Ramsey County.
• Contributing to resilience hub research and planning efforts.
• Conducting air quality monitoring research.
• Developing educational materials to support engagement around the health impacts of climate change.
This intern will receive a structured orientation to the county’s climate response work, consistent work support from the Climate and Health team, and regular check-ins with the county’s Climate and Health Supervisor to ensure they feel supported and develop new professional skills.
The work schedule will primarily be 40 hours per week, Monday through Friday, with the potential for occasional evening or weekend meetings. This position is a hybrid role, requiring some work conducted in the office and some conducted remotely every week.
Minimum qualifications:
• Ability to communicate effectively with a diverse group of colleagues and residents.
• Ability to organize complex data into easy-to-understand resources or narratives.
• Software competency in Microsoft Office.
• Knowledge of common climate change mitigation and adaptation strategies.
