Job Description: Ranch Hand Intern

Reports to: Ranch Manager/Owner

Position Type: Full Time -Hourly (Spring/Summer only)

 

Company Overview:

The Bear Valley 96 Ranch is a 500 cow/calf operation located in the beautiful and historic Bear Valley of eastern Oregon adjacent to the Mahler National Forest.   It operates on 15,000 acres of meadow, forest and rangeland.  The ranch is under new ownership & management as of 2019 and is working to grow and develop the ranch and its employees. The ranch and its associates are committed to:

  1. Establishing and operating an efficient and effective cow/calf operation
  2. Improving soil and forage to increase the land’s carrying capacity
  3. Building a world class infrastructure to support operations

 

Position Overview:

The Bear Valley 96 Ranch is searching for a ranch hand intern to be part of a small and dedicated team supporting a large cow/calf operation.  General responsibilities will revolve around tending to livestock, flood irrigation, tractor work, soil and forage management, maintaining & building fences, putting up hay, and improving the ranch infrastructure.  This is not a cowboy position; however riding may be required to move cattle.  The ideal candidate will have 1-3 years of ranch experience.  They must be a self-starter that loves to do a variety of jobs and finds joy in getting things accomplished.  This is a great opportunity to have a true adventure this summer.

 

Responsibilities:

Tend to cattle as needed (brand, vaccinate, doctor, tag, etc.)

Feed and water cattle and horses

Repair, maintain and clean equipment and buildings

Irrigate (flood) pastures

Maintain strong fences

Build new fences (wire and pipe & cable)

Support rotational grazing (move cattle and fences)

Support calving activities

Tractor work (drag meadows)

Actively implement weed control

Maintain, improve, and establish water developments

Complete needed construction projects (buildings, roads, ditches, etc.)

Other duties as assigned

 

Requirements:

High School Diploma or GED certificate

Must be able to work up to a 12 hour day and lift 80 lbs

Must be willing to work rain, snow, or shine

1+ years of agriculture related experience

Posse a valid driver’s license

Commitment to maintaining a drug, tobacco, and alcohol-free workplace/ranch

 

Desired:

Attending school in an agriculture related discipline

2+ years of ranch experience 

CDL or farm endorsement 

Experienced mechanic & welder

Experienced operating heavy equipment

Experienced rider and roper

 

Compensation:

Competitive pay based on experience

Housing provided (electricity, water, sewer, internet)

 

Work Hours:

Work hours vary to ensure all tasks are completed, however normal hours are Mon-Fri 7-6 (Sat 7-noon) (off Sun)

Calving season: extended hours and additional days to regularly check on cattle

Haying season: also work ½ day on Sunday
