Intern- Transit Asset Management

The Metra Internship Program provides an opportunity for college sophomores, juniors, seniors, and graduate students to gain practical experience through on-the-job learning. Metra assigns students to projects related to their academic/educational field of study, which complements classroom instruction. The knowledge gained contributes to career development, while the experience provides insight on the wide variety of jobs in the transportation industry.

 

The Asset Management and Supply Chain Operations Division consists of all Storehouse and Warehouse Operations, Enterprise Asset Management (EAM), and Transit Asset Management (TAM). The purpose of the department is to serve various customers within Metra. Managing the continuous supply of parts, materials, and services required to support Engineering, Mechanical and Transit Operations. The department operates Metra's four storehouses and one central warehouse. Additionally, the department manages the agency's Transit Asset Management (TAM) program and the Enterprise Asset Management (EAM) systems.

 

The Department of Asset Management and Supply Chain is engaged in internal projects to strategically unify all of Metra's asset data for each asset class into an EAM system and configuring it as required to expand and build out work order asset management functionality. This will provide core asset lifecycle management activities for operations specific to the needs of the rail industry.

 

The Intern will integrate classroom learning with personalized training from members of the EAM system implementation team. The Intern will be working with modern technology, will understand how this technology supports business processes, and will be exposed to a working team of motivated, highly talented individuals executing a complex plan that will transform Metra's operations. The goal of the EAM system projects is to gain operational efficiencies, improve and automate processes, and improve access and visibility to asset data to better manage Metra's business.

 

The Intern will work directly with Departmental Managers, asset owners, and staff across Metra's Asset Management groups to assist in:

 

  • Identification of source data from internal user departments
  • Analysis and mapping of source data to EAM system requirements
  • Development of data upload templates
  • Extract and aggregate source data into upload templates
  • Data translation and cleansing
  • Prepare and initialize foundational asset registry and other data into EAM System
  • Enterprise Asset Management system development
  • Geographic Information System (GIS) development

 

Candidates can expect salary offers that range from the minimum to the mid-point of the salary range. Metra provides full pay ranges, so candidate can consider their growth potential.

 

Metra is a railroad employer subject to the provisions of the Railroad Retirement Tax Act, not the Social Security Administration.

Job Requirements:

The Intern must be currently enrolled as a sophomore, junior or senior in an undergraduate program or in a graduate program from an accredited institution. Preferred areas of study are Accounting, Computer Science, Engineering, Geography, Economics, Statistics, Applied Mathematics, or other related discipline, but are not required. Must have excellent written and oral communication skills and be very detailed oriented working with complex data. Proficiency in Microsoft Suite and ESRI ArcGIS Technology strongly preferred.

 

Must be 18 years or older; able to legally work in the United States; a student in good standing for each semester/quarter during their internship; and available to work between 12 and 20 hours per week and the option to work 12-40 hours per week during summer months.
