Civil Engineering Intern - Rotational program

Moffatt & Nichol specializes in complex waterfront projects and is recognized as one of the worldwide leaders in this field. We are actively looking for a Civil Engineering Intern interested in a Rotational Program to join our Seattle office. The Rotational Program provides exposure to the office’s overlapping engineering specialties of waterfront civil & ports, marine structural, inspection & rehabilitation, and coastal engineering

Duties and responsibilities:

    • General duties
      • Assist with the preparation of engineering drawings, drawing mark-ups and execute drawing revisions using one or more of the following programs - AutoCAD, Civil3D, Revit, and Bluebeam.
      • Calculate quantities of elements for construction of projects and prepare cost estimates
      • Visit project sites as necessary to document site conditions.
      • Perform and document quality checks
      • Study, evaluate, and document design criteria, research applicable codes, and present findings to project team for implementationAssist in the preparation of design calculation packages
    • In addition to the general duties, the intern will rotate through various overlapping specialties with the following potential duties:
      • Coastal Engineering
        • Support the preparation of coastal studies, including erosion analysis, metocean analysis, coastal hazards, and sea level rise impacts.
        • Contribute to the design for various coastal and riverine project elements including shore stabilization, dredging plans, shoreline restoration, breakwaters, jetties, and navigation channels.
        • Prepare calculation for wind waves, scour protection, revetment design, wave run-up, and wave forces on structures using existing MATLAB, MS Excel, and Python tools.
        • Prepare maps and figures using QGIS and ArcGIS Pro for reports and permit applications.
        • Calculate quantities related to a projects aquatic impacts and credits in support of permit applications.
      • Marine Structural Design, Inspection, and Rehabilitation
        • Assist with analysis, design, inspection, and rehabilitation of marine structures and assets.
        • Support the design and rehabilitation of marine structures, including but not limited to piers, wharves, bulkheads, seawalls, offshore platforms, mooring and berthing dolphins, catwalks, utility support structures, drainage structures, retaining walls, towers and foundations.
      • Waterfront Civil & Ports
        • Participate in the design and preparation of documents for waterfront civil site and land-side port development (site layout, grading, storm water, erosion control, utilities, and other infrastructure systems)
        • Support the design of waterfront amenities such as boat launches and marinas, and parks.

Qualifications: 

  • Pursuing a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Civil Engineering or related discipline
    • Must be at least a Junior in their Bachelor’s program
  • Possess a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0
  • Experience preparing drawings/detailing plans using MicroStation and/or AutoCAD through drafting classes or other CAD experience
  • EIT certification preferred
  • At least one previous related internship preferred but not required
  • All new hires will be required to successfully complete and pass a pre-employment (post offer) background check in compliance with NIST 800-171

Base salary range: 

$25.00 to $31.00 per hour based on years of experience, level of education obtained, professional registration, and meeting required qualification in job description.  

Physical requirements: 

of work is office based. Some site visits may be required which may necessitate navigating unpaved or natural terrain while carrying equipment.
