POSITION SUMMARY
Under the direction of the Technical Services Manager, the Technical Services Intern is responsible for assisting and supporting QC Mix Design and Lab Technicians to ensure the integrity and compliance of the asphalt mix design laboratory. The goal is to produce quality HMA pavements while maintaining a safe environment. This is accomplished through AASHTO accredited laboratories in the company beginning with the mix design process and continuing through forensic testing and research. In addition, the QC lab Technician is to work professionally with State officials and other engineers.

ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES
• Uphold the corporate policy on honesty and integrity in reporting test results;
• Assist in ensuring all quality procedures are being followed in the company through on-site inspections, equipment calibration, verification and inspection records, and technician training records.
• Follow preventative maintenance program for laboratory equipment in the region.
• Ensure that proper procedures and policies are strictly followed for the mix design laboratory – subject to periodic audits to ensure compliance.
• Assist and support the QC Mix Design and Lab Technicians with the set-up and break-down of labs:
o Fill out the proper forms when setting up a lab.
o Calibration of equipment and maintaining the calibration schedule.
o Ordering of required supplies.
o Completing the proper forms when tearing down a lab for a move or at the end of the season.
o Make sure the Regional Technical Services Manager (RTSM) has all the needed paperwork (job data, calibration data etc.)
• Assisting and supporting the QC Mix Design and Lab Technicians with testing responsibilities:
o Test all material using the applicable specifications and current test procedures.
o Follow all specifications to the letter of the law.
o Follow the written Standard Operating Procedures for all testing – gradations, specific gravities, crush counts, etc.
o Use the HTCP manuals and Corporate QC Lab Standards Manual as a guideline.
o Learn about how mix and/or aggregate changes are made at the plant.
o Keep lab clean and orderly at all times, following all the cleaning schedules.
• Assist and support technicians in the completion of all mix designs in a timely fashion and assure that the final products meet or exceed job specifications.
• Assist in maintaining files of all mix design data.
• Documentation Responsibilities:
o Document all test data neatly and clearly on the appropriate data sheets and charts.
o Chart and analyze data after every test.
o Enter all information on a data sheet (job number, State ID number, verification number, time of test etc.)
o Fill out and turn in time reports daily – obtain job and cost item numbers from the RTSM or the foreman.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS
• Work towards an associates or bachelor's degree in materials science & engineering, laboratory science or other engineering-related field.
• Strong interpersonal, organization and communication skills, work well in a team environment.
• The ability to effectively handle multiple tasks simultaneously and work effectively and efficiently with minimal supervision.
• Must be a self-starter.

PREFERRED SKILLS
• Prior laboratory experience.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

ADDITIONAL NOTES
The ability to work varied hours including nights/early mornings, weekends and as needed.
