TITLE:  SPECIAL EDUCATION TEACHER/INTERVENTION SPECIALIST     

JOB STATUS: CERTIFICATED STAFF             

REPORTS TO: SCHOOL PRINCIPAL & SPED DEPARTMENT LEADERSHIP

DEPARTMENT: SPECIAL EDUCATION

POSITION OVERVIEW:

Under the direction of the Building Principal and Special Education Department, the Licensed Intervention Specialist develops and provides specialized instruction to meet the unique needs of students who face physical, mental, emotional, and learning disabilities. Evaluates and assesses student progress against instructional objectives that inspire our students to learn and grow in a safe and healthy environment; follows State mandates and functions as IEP Manager to assigned students

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

The statements below are intended to describe the general nature and scope of work being performed by this position. This is not a complete listing of all responsibilities, duties, and/or skills required. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Provide Specially Designed Instruction (SDI) to students with disabilities and maintain a log of this work (SDI log)
  • Write and review Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) for each individual student, specifically including academic, communication, social interaction, behavior and emotional development, play and leisure time within mandated timelines.
  • Follow all the Federal and State Guidelines for the Education of Children with Disabilities, IDEIA and the Operating Standards for Ohio’s Schools Serving Children with Disabilities
  • Initiate, conduct and review IEP meetings, with parents, family and support members and related service providers
  • Implement activities (K-12) in the areas of post secondary training and education; competitive employment/ pre employment; self help, personal care and independent living.
  • Foster and maintain parent communication
  • Must be willing to be a member of a transdisciplinary team of professionals working in an educational setting
  • Facilitate team meetings with the IEP team including Parent, District Representative, General Education Teacher, Related Services(OT, SLP, PT), Nurse and Coordinator
  •  Foster and maintain communication with the families’ private providers
  •  Evaluate students’ short-term (weekly or bi-weekly), intermediate (quarterly), and long-term (yearly) progress and document on the student’s quarterly Progress Reports
  • Conduct and document pre- and post- assessments to monitor individual student progress
  •  Support parents and family members as active participants in all aspect of the students’ evaluation, educational services and decision-making
  • Prepare lesson plans that are developed around each child’s IEP, using a variety of instructional formats- one-on-one instruction, small group instruction, student-initiated interactions, teacher-directed instruction
  • Provide direct instruction in the following program areas: cognition, communication, fine & gross motor, social-emotional and adaptive behavior
  •  Adapt instructional methods to the range of age, abilities and learning styles of the students
  •  Develop behavior intervention strategies, individual behavior management plans and classroom behavior intervention plans to be used in the classroom
  • Work as team leader with paraprofessionals in executing lessons, providing direct service to students, collecting data and overall classroom management
  •  Participate in continuing professional development (e.g., consultations, workshops, conferences) designed to further develop their knowledge and skills
  •  Meet schedules and timelines. 
  • Other duties as assigned by the department or building administration.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in the area of Special Education from an accredited four-year college/university.
  • Hold a valid and current Intervention Specialist K-12 License, as deemed by the Ohio Department of Education.
  • Currently certified or willing to be certified in CPI
  • Currently certified or willing to be certified in First Aid and CPR

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Strategies to improve communication and social interaction skills across environments
  • Familiarity with various assessment tools, methods and functional behavior assessments
  •  Principles, theories, practices and techniques used in curriculum development and classroom instruction for
  • students
  • Knowledge of Ohio’s Academic Content Standards including modifications and implementation to meet each
  • student's needs
  • Curriculum and lesson plan development to meet IEP goals, as well as differentiated instruction
  • Assistive Technology and basic equipment operation related to exceptional students
  • Positive Behavior Support Strategies
  •  Strategies to improve communication and social integration skills across environments

 

PHYSICAL/MENTAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • Tools/Equipment Use: Desktop PC with keyboard and mouse, laptop, scanner, calculator, software, desk, and adjustable chair.
  • Posture: Prolonged sitting and standing; occasional stooping, bending, squatting, kneeling, bending, pushing, pulling and twisting.
  • Motion: Frequent repetitive hand motions, including keyboarding and use of a mouse; occasional reaching
  •  Lifting: Occasional lifting and carrying (less than 10 pounds)
  • Environment: Works in an office/classroom setting; may require occasional irregular hours and/or prolonged hours.
  • Attendance: Regular and punctual attendance at the worksite is required for this position.
  • Mental Demands: Maintains emotional control under stress; works with frequent interruptions.
