Job Title: INTERVENTION AIDE - CLASSROOM/TRANSPORTATION

Definition:
Under general supervision, is responsible for assisting teachers, administrators, building personnel and bus drivers to maintain appropriate student behavior, assist in teaching appropriate behavior to severely emotionally disabled students and assure safety of special education students during transportation; performs related duties as required.
This job posting is for a competitive position which requires a Training and Experience Assessment. The names of all candidates who pass this assessment will be forwarded to hiring managers, based on score ranking, when vacancies occur in this classification. The examination process will consist of a Training and Experience Assessment. The assessment will be provided to candidates who pass the application review process.

Examples of Work:
- Assists teachers, administrators, and bus drivers in maintaining appropriate student behavior in school buildings, on school grounds, during school trips and on school buses during transport.
- Verbally intervenes with SED students (K-12) when necessary.
- Physically intervenes with SED students (K-12) if student is physically harmful to self or others.
- Assists bus drivers in loading and unloading of students.
- Takes and records daily attendance of children, reports students' absences of 10 days or more.
- Talks with students to ascertain specific information concerning problems and to assist them in developing an appropriate behavior plan.
- Takes money or medication, being sent to school for student, from students or parents for safekeeping until arrival at school or home.
- Transports or assists with transporting students to their home when necessary.
- Assists teachers in maintaining appropriate student behavior in classroom.
- Attends required training meetings concerning the needs of SED students and other related subjects.
- Participates in parent and administrator conferences when requested.
- Escorts or assists in escorting students throughout school building.
- Attends out-of-building and overnight activities and field trips in order to assist teachers in supplemental teaching opportunities.
- Under direction of teacher, assists with academic tasks and other instructional opportunities.
- Escorts disturbed student to administrator's office for counseling or discipline, reports details to administrator.
- Completes copies and distributes seating chart for students on the bus and assists bus drivers in completing left/right sheet and time study sheet of route.
- Other related duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications:
Any combination of training and experience equivalent to completion of the twelfth school grade and one (1) year of experience in maintaining control of and teaching appropriate behavior to emotionally disturbed children and adolescents in residential or non-residential programs and facilities or one (1) year as a Child Care Attendant with the Columbus Public Schools or comparable experience elsewhere. Substitution(s): An associate's degree in mental health/chemical dependency and mental retardation technology or equivalent may be substituted for the required experience.

If you are interested in having your name included on the new eligible list, you will need to apply for this position within the filing period indicated above and successfully complete all phases of the testing process. All applicants must complete all phases of the testing process in order to receive a final score. The names of all candidates who pass this examination will remain on the eligible list for two years, unless the eligible list is replaced prior to or extended beyond the two years. If a candidate's name is certified and the candidate is to be considered for employment, the hiring process will include one or more interviews, a criminal background check, and may include a pre-employment drug test.
The certification process will be the top 10 candidates on the eligible list, or top 25% of the list, whichever is greater, based on overall test score.
