LHSI Intern: Social Media & Digital Outreach Intern

Program Summary:    

This internship is offered as a part of the Life-Health Sciences Internship Program (LHSI). This program connects 125 IU Indianapolis undergraduates per year with internships on campus with faculty and staff in a variety of health and science related campus areas/programs. All LHSI internships start in August 2025 and end in May 2026 and are paid $13/hour for up to 10 hours per week. Work-study is accepted but not required.

Overview of the internship site: The Office of Community Outreach and Engagement (COE) at the IU Simon Comprehensive Cancer Center connects cancer research with the communities that need it most to reduce the cancer burden, promote prevention and screening, and address health disparities in Indiana. At the IU Simon Comprehensive Cancer Center's Office of Community Outreach and Engagement (COE), we work to bridge the gap between cancer research and the community. Our goal is to share important cancer information, promote prevention and screening, and address health disparities in Indiana. An intern will gain hands-on experience in health communication and community outreach by supporting educational campaigns, developing social media content, and translating complex research into messages that resonate with the public. This opportunity is ideal for students interested in public health, communications, or nonprofit work who want to make a tangible impact on health equity.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Collaborate with the Director of Communications and Community Outreach to create a social media toolkit that empowers community organizations to share clear, accessible cancer education materials. 
  • Develop engaging and culturally relevant social media content to promote cancer prevention, screening, tobacco control, clinical trials, and survivorship. 
  • Monitor social media channels, track engagement metrics, and provide insights to enhance community outreach efforts. 

Work Environment and Dress Code: The work is performed primarily in an office setting with dress code: Business casual 

Project-specific qualifications: 

  • Strong ability to write clear, concise, and engaging content for diverse audiences. 
  • Passion for addressing health disparities and engaging with communities to promote health equity. 
  • Basic knowledge of social media platforms (e.g., Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn). 
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks, manage deadlines, and prioritize work effectively. 
  • High attention to detail to ensure that content is accurate and free of errors. 
  • A high degree of professionalism to work with sensitive health topics and interact with diverse populations. 

Hours per week: flexible based on student needs (10 maximum); flexible within regular work hours

LHSI Qualifications    

must be graduating May 2027 or after (usually a current freshman or sophomore in Spring 2025)   

Current full time IU Indianapolis undergraduate in 2025-26  

minimum overall GPA of 2.0
