The Challenge

We are looking for an Entry-Level Assistant Resident Engineer to join our Kinston Construction Engineering team.

In this role, you will:

  • Assist our Resident Engineer providing daily management and contract administration of roadway and structure projects constructed by private contractors.
  • Supervise junior engineering technicians.
  • Perform project field inspections.
  • Prepare monthly/final pay estimates.
  • Create, review, and evaluate supplemental agreements and claims.
  • Ensure compliance with NCDOT and external environmental agency erosion control and permit requirements.
  • Resolve constructability issues.
  • Serve as NCDOT project representative for formal and informal meetings with contractors, utilities, local officials, media, and the public.

  

What You Bring

  • Experience reading and interpreting highway construction plans and contracts.
  • Leadership skills managing, directing, assisting, or training staff.
  • Experience administering contracts.
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of Civil Engineering and an understanding of general concepts, practices, and theories used in construction, construction inspection, and/or construction surveying.
  • Good communication skills to verbally and in writing communicate in a clear and concise manner.
  • You can make independent decisions using sound engineering judgement.
  • Computer skills using computers and electronic tablets, with SharePoint and HiCams experience preferred.
  • Commitment to applying safety standards and program to operations.
  • Fitness to perform moderate physical activity, such as walking, climbing, kneeling, and standing.
  • Safety toe shoes.
  • Ability to safely operate a motor vehicle.
  • Ability to work nights, weekends, and holidays when needed.
  • Ability to work when exposed to hazards including construction equipment, high traffic volumes, and heights over water or traffic and  outside in varying temperature and weather conditions.

 

Note

  • We may require registration as a professional engineer by the NC Board of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors.

 

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering; or
  • An equivalent combination of training and experience.
