Communications Internship

 

This position will hone communications, media and public relations and writing skills, and it requires an upbeat attitude, a commitment to learning and improving, and a willingness to help where needed. The intern will gain experience in the public relations field, provide concrete deliverables and learn from a diverse and seasoned group of professional colleagues. 

 

Under the mentorship of OKI’s Communications and Legislative Affairs Manager, the Communications intern will work 20- 25 hours a week contributing to a broad range of communications projects and initiatives. Hours are 9am – 4:30 pm T -TH, with the possibility of an additional 8 hours per week (telecommuting). Internship will run from May 20 or 27 – August 5 or 12, 2025 (some flexibility in hours and dates).

 

Duties

  • In this role, you will be working closely with the Communications team, with exposure to Executive Management and all areas of the organization.  
  • As Communications intern, you will attend OKI committee meetings with exposure to more than 100 government and transportation officials in the region. 
  • Develop, create, and/or organize content for press releases, social media platforms, newsletters, website, outreach activities and/or other communication means. Content may be information, photos, graphics, videos, charts or other communications items.
  • Assist with the research, drafting, and design of elements of documents, presentation materials, and reports, and the updating of existing items to certain accessibility standards. 
  • Contribute to the cataloging of photos, communications pieces, future ideas, and more. Position will be responsible for independent traveling within the region to photograph relevant to work at OKI, including but not limited to, ongoing and finished projects. 
  • Will communicate routine information in a clear and accurate way with internal & external contacts.
  • May assist in external public affairs such as staffing a booth or attending a government or professional meeting. 

 Required Skills, Competencies, and Abilities: 

  • High school diploma or GED and a rising college junior or above.  Equivalent combination of education and/or relevant experience is acceptable   
  • Ability to work both independently and as a team member 
  • Always representing OKI in an ethical and professional manner 
  • Excellent organizational, written, and verbal communication skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills, and a service mentality
  • Demonstrated ability to juggle multiple priorities with superior attention to detail
  • Ability to perform comfortably in a fast-paced, deadline-oriented work environment, independently and within a team
  • Must be able to remain in a stationary position for an extended period
  • Strong typing, writing, and proofreading/editing skills 
  • Ability to professionally make phone calls and draft emails with appropriate language and etiquette
  • Skilled in Outlook and the Microsoft Office Suite, especially Microsoft Word
  • Knowledge of or experience with CanvaAdobe Acrobat Pro, and/or web content management/editing software is a plus
  • Knowledge of or experience with Canva and/or web content management/editing software is a plus
  • Valid driver’s license, or ability to obtain one within one month of start of internship.  Good driving record
