POSITION SUMMARY

Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL) Study Mentors are peer facilitators who help students with time management, note-taking, reading and study skills, and with the transition to college life. Study Mentors model confident academic engagement, and offer a student perspective that is real, responsive, and responsible.

Study Mentors meet one-on-one with students from all classes and both colleges, although the majority of appointments are with First Year students. Students, who are often referred by a Dean, advisor or coach, might have just a single meeting, or a series of meetings through the semester.

Study Mentors are paid for their work. Appointments are held throughout the week and weekends, during daytime and evening hours, at the Center for Teaching and Learning, on the second floor of the Library.

Responsibilities

  • Meet with students to help with time management and study skills when appointments are booked, and provide workshops on these skills as required.
  • Keep detailed and accurate records of meetings with students.
  • Participate in other student support and outreach activities as needed.
  • Attend Study Mentor staff training (Date TBA) AND monthly professional development/staff meetings; complete other professional development as needed.
  • Maintain ongoing communication with the Associate Director.
  • Maintain the highest standards of professional behavior when representing the Center for Teaching and Learning.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Students need to be in good academic standing. Although they do not need a specific GPA, they need to be able to model effective time management and learning strategies.
  • Study Mentors need to be responsive to students’ needs and requests, and to help them identify strategies that will be effective for them.
  • Study Mentors need to be role models who can set an example of positive engagement with HWS.
  • Students should be Sophomores at the time of application. Training will happen during Sophomore spring, and depending on performance, budget and program needs, students will continue in the role through their Junior and Senior years (not including semesters abroad).
  • Students who are abroad in Sophomore spring should apply regardless; interviews and training can be conducted over Zoom.
