LHSI Intern: Interprofessional Clinic Intern

Program Summary:  

This internship is offered as a part of the Life-Health Sciences Internship Program (LHSI). This program connects 125 IUI undergraduates per year with internships on campus with faculty and staff in a variety of health and science related campus areas/programs. All LHSI internships start in August 2025 and end in May 2026 and are paid $13/hour for up to 10 hours per week. Work-study is accepted but not required.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Working with the Director of Interprofessional Practice Development allows you experiences to learn:

          1. the roles and responsibilities of health professions.

          2. about psychological safety with healthcare teams.

          3. how team-based clinics operate.

          4. how to be a member of a healthcare team.

This internship provides opportunities to participate with a variety of health professions’ learners and providers seeing patients in team-based collaborative care clinics (e.g., the Comprehensive Pain Assessment Clinic (CoPAC), the Team Care Clinic (TCC), and the Well Child and Oral Health Clinic). 

• assist and create promotional materials for the team-based clinics
• update clinical documents for clinical faculty, staff, providers and learners
• utilize Zoom assist patients and clinicians for virtual care (as needed)
• participate in team huddles and patient visits with providers and learners
• assist members of the IU Interprofessional Practice and Education Center with interprofessional education (IPE) programming and events (e.g., Breaking the Cycle of Addiction Experience, Interprofessional Workshops, TEACH Sessions, Health Fairs, and more)
• enjoy being a team member promoting interprofessional education (IPE) and interprofessional education and collaborative practice (IPECP) at IU - Indianapolis
• work closely with Dr. April D. Newton, Director of Interprofessional Practice Development (IPE Center) and physical therapist, in addition to other clinicians and staff members

Work Environment and Dress Code: The work is performed in an office setting in the IU Health Primary Care Central Indianapolis Clinic (Dunlap Building on Wishard Boulevard – IU-Indianapolis campus). Dress code: Clinic attire is scrubs or business casual. Non-clinic attire is business casual.

Hours per week: 10; Flexible. Determine by the student's class schedule and availability (10 hours maximum) The Buprenorphine Clinic is Monday mornings from 8:00am – 12:00pm. The Comprehensive Pain Assessment Clinic is Friday afternoons from 12:30pm – 5:00pm. The Geriatric Clinic is Tuesday mornings from 8:00am – 12:00pm. The Team Care Clinic and Well Child and Oral Health Clinic are scheduled throughout the year.

• Interpersonal communication skills
• Demonstrate teamwork skills
• Ability to work autonomously with projects
• Patient confidentiality is of utmost importance during the clinical experiences.
• Individuals interested in learning and being involved in patient care will find this internship an excellent educational/work experience
• Experience with Microsoft office software (e.g., Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
• Familiarity with Zoom software
• Data Entry Skills
• Commitment to attend the Buprenorphine Clinic, Comprehensive Pain Assessment Clinic and/or Geriatric Clinic (Flexibility with classes is considered)
• Clinics my be cancelled depending on holidays and preceptors’ schedules

By the end of the LHSI program, you will:

LHSI Qualifications  

• must be graduating May 2027 or after (usually a current freshman or sophomore in Spring 2025)
• Current full-time IUI undergraduate
• minimum overall GPA of 2.0
• All majors welcome
