The Equine Reproduction Laboratory is part of the Animal Reproduction and Biotechnology Laboratory in the Department of Biomedical Sciences within the College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences at Colorado State University. The CSU Equine Reproduction Laboratory has developed leading-edge equine reproduction techniques for the equine industry for over 45 years. Techniques such as collection of semen and artificial insemination, recovery and transfer of equine embryos, shipping cooled semen, and shipping cooled embryos are now routine in the equine industry, due in large part to the research, education, and outreach efforts of the CSU Equine Reproduction Laboratory.

The Colorado State University Equine Reproduction Laboratory is pleased to offer a unique opportunity for Equine Science, Animal Science or Veterinary students to further their skills and knowledge in the area of equine reproduction, foaling and basic horse care. 

Responsibilities can include, but are not limited to (and depend on experience):

·       Handling mares and foals during reproductive exams

·       Assisting with record keeping – attention to detail needed

·       Administration and preparation of oral and injectable medications

·       Managing pharmacy stock

·       Sorting recipient mares - extreme patience and organization needed

·       Observation of horses regularly for any injuries or signs of illness including foal watch

·       Assisting farriers with trimming or shoeing

·       Assisting with foal care

·       Assisting staff with inseminations, uterine lavages and infusions, embryo flushes and             transfers

·       Grooming and bathing mares

·       Daily turn out of mares and foals

·       General lab, exam area and equipment cleaning, usage of autoclave

·       Stocking

·       Ability to work in extreme weather conditions

Minimum experience required: One year of experience caring for, feeding or providing health care for horses (mares, foals and stallions) in a veterinary, breeding or boarding facility. Proficient in haltering, handling horses, and administering oral and injectable medications. Knowledgeable about common medications and illnesses. Must be a self-starter.
